Barlow Road on Mt Hood

Barlow is part of the Oregon trail, it was built so settlers could avoid the expensive and dangerous trip down the Columbia River. It originally went from The Dalles to Oregon City, most of it has been replaced by modern roads but a piece of it does survive. It is a 30 mile dirt road through the forest from Hwy 35 to the sleepy town of Wamac. NoPoChicken and I decided to take advantage of the nice weather on Saturday to ride the road.

The day started out cloudy but it was starting to look up

We trailored the bikes up and that looked like a good decision as we drove through thick fog on the way up the mountain.

We offloaded at the Barlow Road Snowpark screwed around had a little lunch and then hit the trail. The first thing I see is that the road is closed a mile down the road, I figure we should see how closed it is.

NoPoChicken

This is why the road is closed, this bridge is "failing" looked fine to us.

The leaves are turning

NoPo blasting by me as I'm shooting leaf pics

A mile later I'm riding up a little hill and the bike just quits. I try to start it and it turns over but won't start. I screw around with the kick stand since the last few times I had to have the side stand up to get the bike to start. I start poking at the bike and I find this.

Well there's your problem. I determined that the side stand switch is falling apart and I just cut off the connector and I'm going to bypass the switch. The only problem is that there are three wires on that connector and it takes me a few minutes to find the right combination. I get the wires together and zip tie the harness back to frame and hit the road. A little ways up here comes NoPo wonder where the hell I am.

We continue down the road, it is a lot of fun just we enough to have great traction but not slippy. I stop to take some more pics and we see Mat and Susi go by. They stop and we have a nice conversation by the side of the road, they head west and we continue east.

We get far enough east that you can acutally see the sky so we put on our sunglasses, NoPo's fog up rather quicky so she has to compensate

A quick pit stop

We come up to this bridge and NoPo takes my suggestion to practice her water crossings.

A little help

I said just gas it

Ok now I will go help

She ran into these

Mat and Susi had warned us that there was a log across the road but they were able to get over it. When we got there we decided to use a different technique.

I thought it would be easier to move the log than wrestle the Dakar over it.

The road opens up here and gets to be a lot of fun

We had to stop here

She is a great subject so expressive

It was starting to get late in the day so we blasted into Wamac, got gas and lunch. We took a different route back, the road I wanted to take didn't exist so we rerouted it started out to be a main line gravel road but it turned into an unmaintained dirt road with some huge puddles. NoPo didn't make it through all of them unscathed

No damage done just a little damp.

We were on a single lane paved forest road making great time when we ran into this.

It got thicker and thicker as we went, we down to 15MPH at times. We finally got back just as the sun was setting.

I was happy to be in the car as we had warm dry clothes and it was very nice driving through the fog in a warmth and comfort.

This is an "Oh Shit" look if I ever saw one.

Hey NoPo, after he told you to gas it and you gassed it, did he tell you "not so much".

Great pictures they make me wish I was there instead of here at work.

That ^^^^^^ look is a pic or two after the REAL "Oh Shit" moment !!

This is the "I got away with it, and didn't go down" look

In my world, not going down is making it. Even if just barely.

Xrays not sure if there are any, but I have the hardware and screws they pulled out of my wrist, after they fixed the shoulder. I too fought the law of gravity and the law won. We missed you also and were urging Shelly to get you to come that Fri. night
