I slept in a hammock once, as a boy scout, over about 4 feet of snow, then promptly swore to never do that again. I froze my formerly skinny butt off and was miserable all night. I couldn't move around, and felt like some giant retarded moth emerging in the morning. The jokers who stayed in the snow cave were WAY warmer. |

Nearly every night, we will be in a private campground. It might be really hard to find a place to hang and Hammock. Red Mountain Campground in Silverton (RMAR Basecamp) will be one of them and here is another one.....

BgDaddy,
I'm planning on the same with a hammock rather than a tent. Well, at least I was before reading the follow up posts. I guess I'll spend time this summer figuring out how to make it work without trees to anchor it to.

990 but not a big GS?
Humm, a KTM 990 can make it but not a big GS?
Sounds a bit biased towards orange. I think the ride on either would be friggin miserable and damaging to ones plastic...

Nope...not Orange biased....don't own one. A 650GS or 800GS would be perfect for this ride, not the 1200's. By the way....I will throw out a teaser for you 1200 boys, be you a GS/GSA or Super Tenere, etc..... You will see a post coming shortly that will be a big challenge and a similar 7 day ride....led by a GSA. Coming soon!!!!

I wanna go!
I'm very interested, but I'm not sure if I want to deal with it on my 950 Adventure. I'm an expert rider, but I don't want to struggle too much (I'm 52 years old with jacked up knees) and hurt myself or my bike. I'm trying to pick up a new 450 or a 500 EXC. If I get one of those, you can count me in!

GSA of roading
I like my XR650R for true dual sport / off road. While somehow the hard core folks with fat wallets do ride them off road, the GSA is best suited to be used as a street bike and for occasional fire roads in my opinion. I've put 52K on mine so far and will do D2D in AK this summer on it, but it's just tooo big and tall geared for any technical stuff. Never tried Dunlop 606's on it though
