Ted,
Do you feel more confident in your coffee supply now that Niles has headed home? Please say hello to Patsy for me. (Niles once woke me from a sound sleep to change Steve LaRoza's motor in Africa. I was back in bed in 45 minutes. Had to be reminded of the details the next morning.) Also let Mike, Luis and Mark know that I'm watching closely. Have fun guys. Wish I were there.

No bandwidth for pics, using my phone. Maybe when we get to Copiapo as we'll have some time off for a day while Ned does the loop. Rest day will be an engine change if all goes to plan. Gotta run, cerveza time

Question: In the ranking they have 'scratch, stage, overall'. What does 'scratch' mean in this context?

Occasionally, the stage will be broken into two (or more) competitive segments, for example when the race was neutralized through the "sensitive natural area" a few years ago (cue the infamous Coma tire incident).

So in that instance, there would be two scratch times, which would be combined to make the stage time.

Okay, then when its just a normal everyday stage where everything is run as planned, why is there a scratch time at all?

Ned is back at camp. He looks like he is handling things just fine

"It was a fun day" was how Ned described the day shortly after arriving, said with a big Ned smile....very different from others who are struggling in a big way. Very windy here in the bivouac.....dust.

All in all another great day at the Dakar. Neds bike is performing very well and Tim is wrenching like a seasoned pro.

Looking forward to being cold for a brief moment tomorrow as we cross the Andes.

Night time is when the action starts here, wrecks begin rolling in, the riders from the back of the pack, etc. For me this is an exciting time to be here. Its amazing what some of the mechanics pull off in so short of time.

Ted, Thanks again for the up to the minute reports.

2 questions...What gearing combo did Ned finally decide worked best? How is Ned handling the re-jet requirements for the variation in elevation?

Couldn't tell you, other than it's always been there.

It may just be b/c that's the way their web architecture is set up, it may be as a contingency in case part of the course needs to be neutralized. Not sure.

Ted

If you get the chance can you pop your head into the Desert Rose camp and tell Patsy there are plenty of people this side of the pond cheering the team on !

Go the Brits
