I have access to a two bed private cabin in Robbinsville, with crazy low rates (know the owner, who is trying to convince me to move down there and build on her property) so if you do need a place let me know. It's got a shower and TV, etc with a small kitchen but the only stove is a grill that's right outside.

Absolutely I'd be interested in riding down there with you. If you head down in a group or with some friends, I don't even mind sleeping on the floor, or heck, even in tent.
We'll figure something out close to June. Gotta make it out of winter alive first.

I bought this trunk for my SV for some dry storage this year. Went on a 2100mile trip last year with most of my stuff packed in a duffle bag, and it all got soaked.

The bike came with a luggage rack that bolts under the seat.... but I'm wondering if it is too weak to handle the top case and whatever I put into it. Would I need to buy a rack from SW-Motech or something?

Here is my bike

Let's see a few pics of the rack mounts with the seat off

I wouldn't hesitate to use what you've got, as the SW Motech rack is nothing more than bent aluminum.

What's unfortunate is that your rack has that raised loop on it. Otherwise, you could mount your topbox further forward. Of course, that would hinder getting the seat off. Everything's a tradeoff, I guess.

Also, I'm not sure what kind of duffel you used, but, I've used a drybag and never had a problem with things getting wet.

Cell Phone pics....

It held up carrying all of this through gravel and dirt roads, but some of the weight was sitting on the seat.

If you could weld some type of reinforcement to those, I think you'd be OK. The way it is now, I think, would put way too much stress on those two bolts and would guess the box to be "floppy". Though, looking at the SW Motech mount, I'm surprised it's not more robust than it is.

Eastbound...that rack you have is made in the UK by Rentec. I used to run the same rack. As is, it's rated for a 12 lb load (not much) and unlike the SW Motech and others, does not have secondary anchors to make it more rigid.

Good news is that you also have the OEM Suzuki Aluminum fender eliminator installed.

I used to run a Rentec rack, and here's what I did to help. Go to Lowes, etc and buy a strip of Alum. about 1" wide, 1/8 thick.
Cut 2 arms that act as supports to run from the rack sides down to the fender eliminator. Drill holes and bolt the arms directly to the fender eliminator (it has holes on the side for bungees)
On the end attached to the rack sides, go to a local bicycle shop and get a couple plastic or rubber coated band clamps (most shops have drawers filled with them, used to mount rear racks, etc) and use them as clamps on the rack's tubes.

I did this and it easily supported a top box.

I don't have a picture (no longer use a top box and sold the rack) but here's a shitty drawing clearly showing what I mean.

Nice! I will do that, thanks. Great eye to see I had a fender eliminator, you know these bikes quite well. That should hold the box I bought.

Believe it or not, I will be using the bike for some 2-up day trip touring. I need a set of soft side bags that will fit with a passenger. Any experience on what will be small enough to work?

Hi inmates,

This is my first post. I'm building my SV into a tourer to take some long-distance trips (south) this winter. So far it's got:

Plexifairing GT windscreen
Givi top/side racks
Happy-Trail panniers
Powerlet 12V charging outlet
MSR 1L spare fuel bottles

The stock seat has been fine for me but I'm probably going to throw on some higher bars. Maybe heated grips too. Open to suggestions from those in the know.

Those are commonly called "P-clamps" and they, also, have those at home improvement stores. May have to ask an employee where they're at, though.

No kidding. I saw you didn't have the original fender, but, couldn't have begun to tell you what was there. Sheesh!
