Looking really nice. Have you considered building an extremely short-stroke engine?

I have been thinking of doing this.....

This 87mm piston and ally barrel will make your ES2 into a short
stroke 600cc engine. It is not a D.I.Y. bolt on kit because I
need to re-balance the crank to the weight of the new piston and
machine the rebate in the cylinder head to fit the new barrel.
The machining leaves a squish band.
Couple this with an almost flat piston crown and you get a full
600cc short stroke engine with higher compression ratio and better
breathing.
Your ES2 will then be capable of pulling a higher gear with 80 mph cruising. (Pushrod Performance)

I need to see if the 350 head can be machined that far.

Way back in the mists of time, I bought an oil tank with a big hole in it, this one to be exact...

Well said hole is now a non hole, and today it also had a nice shiney new filler cap fitted, so next stop will be the body shop for some filler and paint...

And as the sun had finaly decided to join us, I thought I would grab a couple of pictures of my newly prepped head and rocker box too.

Time for a nice cold Cider...

Thanks for the updates ... I've got no idea what's going on really, I just enjoy looking at the pretty pictures.

Whooo and indeed Hoooo!

Another big part of the puzzle fell into place today, in the shape of an ES2 500 iron barrel, it has had a repair or two in its life, as you would expect, it is also on the top end of the bore size at 82.3, but I am looking for a late 40's AJS piston to fit in there, but if I fail in that direction I shall have a look at getting a liner fitted, and taking it back to standard (79mm) bore size.

I also started looking at how to fix my newly aquired Smiths tacho, which I want to fit in a jaunty old fashioned classic race style.

more, please, says the Norton. Reckon after the embarassment of going to Belgium on that Kandy Red modern bike, you'll be working on this good Norton project again.

It has been a struggle so far this year balancing the time between two projects, my Guzzi is in bits awaiting a fork seal tool to arrive from the USA, Why can't I find one here in the UK? and my Norton has again taken a back seat, as I continue to search for parts for the engine.
Try as I might, I have been unable to find a crank assembly, and on mentioning this to my Norton friends, I was offered a complete 1948 model 18, 500 competition engine, of unknown condition, for a good price. And on first look all seemed to be Ok, it turned over on the crank nut, so I shook hands on the deal.

Well today I was able to lift the motor onto the bench to have a quick look inside, this in itself was to be a real surprise!
After undoing the stainless head bolts and removing the head, we were surprised to find a newly built engine, of 550cc, comprising of a polished crank and con rod, a re-bored barrel, and new BSA B50 hi compression piston, it was also fitted with an Al-Fin head, this head had also been rebuilt with new large valves. It seems this motor had been put together for competition use, but then put away and never used.
It now just needs pulling apart, cleaning, checking for clearances, and putting back together again, a right result.

good find indeed

Really glad to see this project progressing, sell the Guzzi and you'll have the funds to finish it well.
Now you have the perfect motor for a sidecar outfit, why not?

Sell the Guzzi! are you mad I have not had time to enjoy the damn thing yet, really, the Guzzi is to stay, and so is the Norton, I am not in a real rush to finish the Norton, it will happen in its own time. Having said that I am not that far away from hearing it run. I am only short of a few parts now, clutch assembly, Mag/dyno, primary cases, the front wheel needs building, headlight, speedo, cables, levers, fender(mudguard) stays, wiring, and petrol tank. I think that pretty much covers it.

"WELLWORTHY AL-FIN" Mrs P's Dad (RIP) worked at Wellworthy's from leaving school in the early 1960's thru' to just before the millennium I knew they made pistons and stuff, but not heads to ... cool.
