Heavier spring for 640 adventure?

I'm loading my 2003 640 adventure up for a trip trough Africa but wonder if it is wise to fit a stronger spring to the rear. It now has an 70-260 spring (meaning 70 kilo with 260 length).

I fitted the Touratech alu canisters (empty) and fixed a spare rear tire to the rear of the bike and already the bike drops way low to the ground.

I'm fitting a stronger one to mine, they are readily available from your local WP importer. I am upping the springs in the forks to.

What rates are you going with Buckster, and what do you weigh?

I weigh 215# (down from 240 and still dropping), and I just received a set of .48 for the front and 8.0/260 for the rear. Almost went with .50 on front, but several suspension gurus recommended against it. Hopefully I'll install them this weekend.

Stobie, any line on who has the .50's? If I can find those, I will order them for the 950 and move the OEM .48's from the 950 to the 640.

WP's stiffest spring is a 0.48, if you need anything stiffer you'll have to go with an aftermarket spring such as Eiback. Check out http://www.racetech.com/ for further infomation.

If you are going to Africa on your MC then we have no sympathy for you and your problems... where's the jealousy smiley?

Anyhow, have a great trip and please send postcards! You doing a prelim writeup or anything?

PS - the stock Adv setup is for a 165lb rider so anyone who is north of that and loading gear on should definately beef up the shock and forks.

Good thread. I have been thinking about heavier springs for the froks of my '02 640 Adv. - sound like the 48's are the right wt. for me. These would be the same as the the stock springs from a 950?

Call Brad Lowe at Lowe's Racing: 989-288-6068. He has no website that I can find, and you might have to leave him a message for a callback, but he probably has what you want on the shelf. From what I understand, he stocks fork springs at least up to .52, and rear shock springs up to 11.0. The rear springs are actually for the PDS shock (but linear instead of progressive), so the ID is slightly larger (63mm v 59mm), but the length is the same, and fitment is no problem.

Also good news is that the fork springs are $80, and the rear spring is $80, include $10 shipping, and I'm respringing both ends for $170. I ordered them Thursday, got'em yesterday.

I'll make sure that you envy me even more after you see the pictures and story that's coming in about one to two months time.
The plan is to go through Marocco, Mauritenie, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Fasso to Ghana and then shipping the Adventure back by boot from Accra.

I'm going for the 85 kilo rear spring (does somebody know how to convert that into imperial measurements?)

In weigh 200-205 and am going with a 80/250 which is right for my weight allowing for riding gear and giving space for winding in some more pre-load to allow for luggage.

I just recently had my suspension done. ESP in La Cresenta, CA. did the work. I weigh 225, the spring they used in the rear is a Eibach 0900,225,0475. I believe they had to machine a spacer as well.
