KTM freeride 350

Anyone know if/when these are coming to aus and how much ? - looks ideal for trails and stuff

a big heavy mofo for a 350!

Dunno about you guys bit it seems a bit heavy for the "gnarly stuff"! From the KTM media blurb

The new KTM Freeride 350 unites extremely easy handling with a low seat height and outstanding ergonomics. Thanks to a minimal weight of only 995 kg, the rider is always completely in control, even on the toughest trails, whether it be rough terrain, narrow single tracks or wide gravel roads. The state-of-the-art 350 cm³ DOHC four-stroke engine, newly laid out especially for the Freeride 350 has proven to be the ideal drive unit for this vehicle concept and scores highly in every situation with controllable, torque-oriented performance characteristics.

They're obviously targeting the BMW riders who would read that and seriously consider buying one for a weight reduction

I wish I had this bike with me in SE Asia right now, I would give it a good go.
Looks appealing, I'm starting to hate my overweight/size DR.

Or GSA owners who want an upgrade in range:

Looks good to me

Leave it as it is for a fang around the woods, then put an overtank and a nice single seat on for longer trips. Seems a good concept to me. 23hp though.....

Looking at the capacity & power output, seems they're going for long term reliability with this donk...
How it would go as an adventure mount is the question, since it only weighs 99kg it would get blown around abit, not to mention the lack of subframe.

If it has a compliance plate in Aus it may be an excellent Enduro / Trials crossover..
I can't register my Scorpa 250 so I can only ride it at trials events or private property.
Maybe its a market worth exploiting for KTM..

This is like the old Bultaco Alpina, or Ossa Explorer half enduro bike half trials bike. Would be best suited to snotty single trail. You can see in the video that the riding position lends itself to standing more than sitting. The steering on it would be pretty quick. As an adventure bike? Well sure anything can be used, but there would be much better options.

Adventure bike?

Well it depends of what kind of adventure you are after... I guess?

But this talk of bigger tanks, luggage carrying capacity...?

The bike is called "freeride"; and like its MTB crossover inspired name (apparently unsuccessfully on this audience tries to convey); it's design brief is to be a lioghtweight, entry level enduro/play bike for medium technical/to very advanced trail riding applications.

Read the spec's, look at the pic's and view the videos and you will see that the bike is a lightweight (99,5 kg), nimble (5,5 liter fuel tank) playbike, that is somewhat of a crossover between a pure trials bike and a purpose built enduro bike... but without the gobs of power, extra kilo's/aggresive suspension (travel/seat height) that an EXC, CRF, WRF or RMX 450 has.

The modest power (23 horses) and lower seat hieght, scaled down ergo's and light weight has got a number of people talking about it's suitability as an entry level enduro bike (ideal for some ladies perhaps) in much the same light as Honda's CRF 230.

The "freeride/crossover" market already has a couple of these type of bikes, Yamaha's "Tricker" which is a touch more "trials" oriented...









or the SCORPA "T": which is very similar in design/approach to the KTM "freeride"



I wouldn't expect these bikes to take off in Oz (too much), with the "big tanks and panniers/multi-day ride" set...
But as a registerable trail/play bike for entry level/advanced trail riding - well, they could find some interested customers...

A few of these up in the Dandenongs, with some mates from the trials club... eh Nev?

Is bigger always better....

When I started riding I had a DT 175 monoshock. We fanged through the bush, went trials riding, went camping, I did pretty much everything with the one bike. Now, I realise that bikes have evolved to fill various niches, but I wonder sometimes if most bikes are now too specialised for your average Joe (me). I have a 640 Adv, some would say a do it all adventure bike and I love it, but when I'm struggling through the sand or the mud, I fantasise about something lighter/ lower and easier to manage. I also like the idea of tooling along sometimes, but the KTM always encourages me to go faster and feels better at a higher pace.

Harking back to the old days. one of these Freerides with 10 more litres and a lighly packed Great Basin would probably do the job for me (and be easier to pick up in the woods). Maybe I'm just getting old.............

Sure, why not?
People tour on MTBs too... KTM are touting that this freeride will have superb fuel economy so large tanks won't need to be so large... and a minimalist approach to luggage is the way to go.
