Garmin map question
I'll start off by saying I'm a Mac guy so right off the bat I have a problem with Garmin. That aside I have an iQue 3600 that is really nice for car stuff but not the bike. I'm waiting for the TomTom Rider but am thinking about getting the 276c since it does seem pretty versatile.
I have a set of City Select CD's from the ique - can they be used on the 276c or is there some sort of software that requires I buy another set? The next question is about maps. If you have topos (I have a set of MapSource Topo CDs from my III+) will those work on the 276c? How do they interact? Can you load both on one card? Can you load them on top of each other so you can see exactly what contour lines the McDonalds is at? Do you have to load topos on one card and City Select on another? How many 256mb cards does the whole country require? Damn I hate those 256 cards. My brother and I are going to start in Colorado and ride to the GP this July but we'd like to do some exploring in Utah and Nevada along the way and I imagine the topos would be good for that. How do you know what to load or do you just do both. Did I mention how much I hate the 256mb cards? Advice anyone? Gregor PS I'm considering buying a cheap used PC laptop just for loading maps - it there anything to make sure of?

City select will work fine on the 276C- and I would think you could get the whole country onto 3 256 cards. I have damned near the whole northeast- from VA to Maine on mine and that's some pretty densely settled and heavily paved area. Rest of the country should be a little bit easier to squeeze on there. I'd say you could definitely do it on 4 cards- no prob. No experience with the topo ?- sorry.

City Select can be unlocked for 2 GPS receivers and yes it will work fine on a GPSmap 276C
The Topo CDs will also work fine on your 276C You need to select all mapping products in one PC session and load them at the same time to your 276C. There is a priority system and only the highest priority map will display. If you have both City Select and Topo loaded and enabled then only City Select will display. You will need to manually unselect City Select for Topo to display. City Select North America v6 is 1591 MB Sizes here http://www.gpsriders.net/mapsource_sizes.html |

Wow, perfect. That answers my questions completely. Now I just need a PC to do the installing. Oh, and the 276c, which I feel a lot more comfortable with now. Are they going to introduce 512 cards at least?
Thanks, Gregor

You must select all the maps you want to load in MapSource at one time first, then load the entire batch to the GPS. Each download erases the previous maps. In MapSource pull up a map set, select which portions you want, pull up different map set, select additional portions. When you have all maps selected, then download. If you don't have the MapSource manual you can download it here. http://www.garmin.com/manuals/MapSou...UsersGuide.pdf |

You can load them both but only view one at a time on the GPS. You can de-select one to view the other. |

To show which mapsets you have loaded in your GPsmap 276C;
from the map screen, push MENU, then Map Information If all are selected then only the highest priority mapset will display; City Navigator is highest then MetroGuide then Topo then Roads And Recreation Manually unselect the maps you do not want to display - toogle to tick box then push OK |

There seems to be quite a bit of Garmin knowledge here and I too would like to tap into it.
I'm going to Germany, Switzerland and Italy next month. I have a Garmin GPS V and a Quest but no European maps. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars for a set of maps, but I can get Garmin Worldmap v6 off Ebay for about $90.00. Neither of my units are listed as compatable with the software above -- I'm not sure why - maybe because the software does not support autorouting? Q: Will Garmin Worldmap V6 work with the GPS V or Quest at all? With autorouting? Q: Is there a place that will rent a Quest or similar GPS with European maps loaded? I promise to bring it back. |

Worldmap
Worldmap will work in the V and the Quest. Worldmap will not support auto-routing in any GPS unit.
Don't know about GPS rentals. Some rental agencies may have cars with GPS in them but probably only be the higher-end models, i.e. MB, BMW, etc. |

MetroGuide may be more useful as it has street level detail and POI It will not autoroute and the area that you can fit in the GPS V (19 MB) may be of limited use. The Quest will be fine. MG does not require an unlock code. You will be able to fit a lot of WorldMap into your units but the detail is lacking and main higways are of (very) limited usefulness. |
