Aww, the gang's all here!! Thanks for reading, kids!!

Last day out.

Nowhere Bob had overheard me talking to another fella about some 'glyphs that I know of and Bob asked if I'd show them to him on my way out over Steel Pass.

We met up at Dans for some coffee and headed out.

The first place Bob wanted to see was the marble tub.

The I took him to the 'glyphs and he found one that I hadn't seen before because the paint had faded leaving only the stippling.

He wanted to hike down into the dry falls that I had told him about so we said our goodbyes. The bike had been acting up on the way up to the pass, but seemed better on this side. I was really confused about what was going on.

I pulled up and stopped at the end of that video. The gravity of my situation hadn't fully sunk in yet...I'm out of fuel. I really screwed up and ran my numbers based on the 40 mpg I had gotten on the way south, but I was around 30 mpg and pretty much out.

I decided to screw with the carbs to give myself the best chance of making it closer to town before having to walk. I raised the needles to get me into the main jet sooner, then leaned out the fuel mix screws. I was so low on fuel that there wasn't enough left to get a good pump from the acc pumps, it would just starve out.

I'm beyond screwed, it's a Tuesday and there are rarely people in this area during the week...I'm on my own and it's my own damn fault.

Man, what a phucking view...

The big bike feels every ounce in the deep sand.

I made it out to Death Valley Road and started west, I'm really not in a safe zone until I make it past Saline Valley Road and it really hit me how bad things were when well before then there wasn't any fuel at all showing in the filter for the right side carb.

Somehow I wheezed the bike into town...it's a 5.8 gallon tank with the fuel pump removed.

I treated myself to a nice breakfast at the cafe.

Completely frozen I found a hot spring to get my core temp back up during my ride back north.

Monitor Pass was open again.

Crested Luther Pass to drop down into South Lake Tahoe, shifted up to sixth and bang, no more power to the ground...ran through the gears and it was the same in every gear. I was at 7,000 feet in the dark and coasted as far as I could, looking for a safe spot where I could load it in the pickup assuming I could get ahold of my wife to come get me.

I hiked around in the woods looking for a cell signal, but my wifes phone went to voicemail, called Nixels in Oakland to get him to play relay to my wife. We got her dialed in for a rescue and I settled in for a cold couple of hours.

Sat there shivering for about an hour and guess who flips a u-ie and comes back? Last Beer Dan!!! He was loaded down with camping gear, but he cleared out a place in the front seat and waited with me until my wife showed up a couple hours later.

The missus and the dogs rescued me!!

We found the number one pizza joint in SLTahoe and they stayed open for us to eat, what a great crew!!

I have spent the rest of the week repairing this pile of junk. We're heading back to DV together on this thing if I can get it back together tomorrow. Worst case, we'll load up the street bike and go anyways.

I had planned to do the final drive this week(last picture), not the clutch and trans shaft too.

Thanks for reading and hopefully we come back in a few weeks with more stories to tell.

Great pics Larry---I've never been to Death Valley--but seen lots of pictures---but you took some of things
I haven't seen pictures of. Loved that old winch and cables.

I think I may go late winter or very early spring this year.

I need to prepare to hike when I ride like you did--lot's of times it would be nice to stretch the legs
and go see something you can't on the bike. I never pack any sturdy shoes or hiking boots---just my riding boots.
I always have the time to do a hike when I'm riding---I just don't.

Thanks !!
BigDog

And hey Frank

One thing is for sure, it's always an adventure when LarryBoy does a report . . . . .

Looking forward to the rest of the story when you return in a few weeks.

Excellent pics and report. Hope you don't mind if I add a song that seems to fit...
