1990 Tengai

Finished up a little work on the Tengai this fall.

Doohickey & valve adjsutment done. Plus I de-adventuredized all of the P.O.(s) farkles & mods. Brand new OE grips and footpegs really freshen it up.

As it sits here it is all 100% stock, (except for the Wolfman bag on the rack) even the little blue brake guards are stock.

Just clicked over to 13K.

It is going to get a new chian & sprokects in the spring along a fresh set of brake pads and some TKCs.

It will then be a-couple-times-a-season ice cream chaser, maybe getting a few hundred miles a year at most.

Only 2 years until she can run a "historical" tag.

Thanks guys!

OK, OK, to be fair.....iridemotorbikes found this bike for me or I would have never discovered it. Have to give credit where credit is due.

Like all of my machines, he gets first dibs if they ever come up for sale.

I won't either. We had crappy winters for the past 5 years. I have three other sleds at my disposal anyways.

(i run it on the same gas as the bike 87) Well there was a big ball of gummed up ethanol restricting the fuel where the fuel line meets the brass flame control knob/ valve. it was almost completely blocked. I'm wondering if my constant change of altitudes sea level to as high as 9,000ft as well as the temp fluctuations 15-70 degrees has anything to do with the ethanol doing what it did?! Anyhow i'm buying a couple of cans of carb cleaner and taking the fucker apart tonight. I'm also checking my plug just to see how she's burning and was wanting to clean out the gas cap vent system.

does anyone have a link handy for the gas cap cleaning procedure?

my petcock seems fine. i turn it off every night and it was a brand new manual raptor 660 unit when i started the trip. in any case i'm carrying a rebuild kit for it.
as far as the fuel system STARTRON,STARTRON STARTRON.
http://mystarbrite.com/startron/

this stuff is amazing i run it in every tank of all my carbuerated vehicles. living in south Florida there is always water in the fuel and the ethanol mix really plays havoc with my older vehicles...this stuff is the cure, and cheap only adds a few cents per gallon.

just a thought....a bad/dirty/kinked chain will give the feeling of surging at high speed. maybe check that while you are looking the bike over. i have run into that a few times and i always think it is the engine at first. a little wd-40 to clean it and free up the links and all is better.

common problems/maintenance

I dont care much to spend another 2hrs trying to find all that I should know KLR650....
Someone please answer these questions:
What are the common problems with KLR650's and maintenance hassels?
Few of my speicfic questions....
Shim&bucket valves?
Usually in spec? Pain in the arse to adjust?
Doohickey hard to change before it grenades itself?
Alternator or electrical flaws?
Overheat much?
Special tools needed?
Body work always in the way of maintenance?
Carb issues?
Cold nature?
Premature clutch failure?
Estimated cost of engine rebuild at a regular shop?
Or can an average joe do it?
engine life typically good for 50-75k on well maintained easy commuter/tourer?
Add anything else in you think i should know...
Thanks.
Basically make me feel better about buying one - or discourage me ....

Shim&bucket valves? Yes, like most modern Japanese bikes
Usually in spec? Pain in the arse to adjust? After break in, periodic adjustments. not hard, and are infrequent.
Doohickey hard to change before it grenades itself? very easy to change with one or two specific tools
Alternator or electrical flaws? a few gen II wire harness issues, otherwise no problems. Charging system is somewhat limited if you're wanting to run a lot of electrical accessories.
Overheat much? No
Special tools needed? "doohickey" rotor tool, otherwise no.
Body work always in the way of maintenance? no, very easy to work on.
Carb issues? No. Common carb that is very reliable.
Cold nature? no more than any carbed vehicle.
Premature clutch failure? no
Estimated cost of engine rebuild at a regular shop? sub 1k if you purchase an 08/09 oil burner, unnecessary for most other years.
Or can an average joe do it? Yes, not difficult. Bottom end is robust, top end "might" need rings at some point.
engine life typically good for 50-75k on well maintained easy commuter/tourer? Yes, 100k miles plus is not unusual.
Add anything else in you think i should know... It's a pig in the dirt and a compromise on the street. But if you only want one bike to do it all then it's a great choice.
Thanks.
