You will not be ably to start the bike in gear with the clutch pulled in. You will have to bypass the switch in order to start the bike in first gear. I highly suggest doing this mod if you ride offroad.

I'm glad I don't have issues like that on mine. the previous owner did all the hard work for me

I wish I could help you but I'm not sure what causes that problem.

So here is MY question to add... Leaving in just about a week for the big trip, what's a list of things I ABSOLUTELY NEED to check on both bikes before leaving? I've done the basics like oil changes, check the chain, install farkles..

And another.. does anybody live in the northern states (North Dakota, Minnesota, so on..) that would like us to stop by for a little meet and greet, maybe even a ride?

Fido
I did the stock bar ($50 +-) again after my get-off (the earlier one). Figured it will most likely happen again before I figure out how to ride this thing off-road. Besides, I figure if the bar doesn't bend, then something else more expensive may bend.
Dropped mine again yesterday and the stock bar didn't bend on me this time.

Will do. People often preach that a KLR is supposed to be dirty and washing it is useless, and to a certain degree I agree, but it has happened often that when I wash it I find something broken or messed up that you couldn't see cause it was too dirty. So I will make sure to do that.

And yeah, CA is a litte too far! Would be nice though. Chris has gone down that way on his bike before, said it was a beautiful ride.

I let it get dirty and let the rain wash it,but I think clean makes visuals so much easier.I gotta head up to your area sometime, love the plains!

I bypassed the clutch switch and removed and bypassed the kickstand switch, I lean my bike over on the kickstand hole in first gear with the motor running to oil the chain.

I don't know, its to easy to just spin the wheel by hand, and doing it your way makes me multitask, and I need my fingers for many things some I don't like to talk about.

This should get some smirks,I just cleaned the chain with some ATF and then put some Evinrude gear case lube on it,trying to use up all the stuff I've accumulated over years and the chain will live on just about anything.

I've been living dangerously by not doing the bypasses on my 2008 ... and paid the price. Ended up camping roadside in Wyoming.

Can anyone make it easy to get to the how-to links/posts/sites/threads for that model year?

Easy Peezy... Mark has all kinds of good stuff here, including the safety bypass procedures.
