a short Qubradas RR

On the map between Socorro and Mountainair there is a radio tower site, I have never been to it and I have asked a few people about it and none of them have ever seen it. Well today I found out why.

This is the road going in

Looks good right. Well what the pic doesn’t show is all the rim killing rocks that were just the right size and spacing to pinch the hell out of a tire so it was 1st gear all 11 miles straight in just a slow ride
And about 50yds from the top there is this thing that looks like a billboard that some one cut down

and the view from the top looking back at Socorro

the Ladrone

south towards stallion gate

north towards Belen

oh the other thing about that road is that it is also the only way out too
back on the main road (a long time later) there is this strange windmill pump set up

I found this cool old jeep trail and followed it for a bout 15 miles

I didn’t have a map or a gps or my spot or riding buddy or anything else that I should have while out there and it was getting late so I turned around and headed back

i am going to have to follow that road another day (like next friday)
a nice sunset on the way out

Great ride report. I'd like to go on the next exploration of the Jeep trail.

In the 80's I was stationed at white sands and we used alot of the range extension up around there for target placement for cruse missile tests, we ran them around like a racetrack. That billboard looked like a radar sighting pannel, the BLM used to make us cut them down when we wernt going to be using them. The footings were curious, couldn't get a good layout by the pics. I would love to go and check them out, any GPS waypoints?

Neat ride. We went up to that lookout last winter - by mistake. We were looking for the thru road a bit further east.

If you go again Friday, I would like to join you. Will PM for details.

That road looks a lot smoother, and with fewer and less sharp rocks, than ALL of the dirt roads in my neck of the woods!!

Part 2

Ok so I am pretty good at procrastinating, but I did make it back out there this time I took my 450

And came at it from the north

it was a little snowy

nothing a little throttle couldn’t handle

nice view looking north

I am so glad this part didn’t have any snow on it

view from the top

the trail is kinda dim

I didn’t take any pictures of the trail when I was in the arroyo but it gets ugly

the trail

after a few turns and around the corner and past the corral

wbbnm did you guys get to this gate and where did you go from there

I went south and found this

that arroyo got ugly kinda quick but smoothed out

weeee

nice trail

cool old hut

As I said in the PM, we know that gate well. We used to be able to get thru it easily. But it is wired seriously shut right now. I know it is on a small patch of private land, but most of the road to and beyond it is on BLM land. I suspect the rancher wired it shut after seeing our tracks thru there.

That road is a blast to ride.

There are no bad signs on the road or the gate. I am thinking about bringing some heavy duty pliers and modifying it so it is easier to open but still looks seriously wired shut.
