Do tell, we believe it has something to do with irrigation.

I believe that building is a Carnegie Library. I am surprized there is so little information about the history of the Idaho Industrial institute later called the intermountain institute and the buildings! I didn't realize part of the campus was OTF Headquarters.

We discovered the campus approx a year ago as well.

going to look for a pic right now!

If I may....

You're correct that it has to do with irrigation. This is a standpipe that receives water siphoned through the marsh from a canal via 30-inch diameter hand-placed concrete pipeline nearly a mile long. Look at Google Earth or other aerial images to see pipeline track. There are three turn wheels at the top controlling gates at the bottom for exit pipes delivering water to farms. See the leak marks on the side from about 1/3 down from the top leaving minerals deposits on the outside? Static water level is a bit higher than the upper leak marks. I got to crawl up the ladder and check it all out once. Its about 100 years old.

No doubt this will trigger someone...but honestly we have 1000 streams over here that look like that...Big Sheep Crk being one of them and Imnaha R. being another currently in this shape...

Thinkin out loud

The main body of water is in the back where all the ice is. The stream bed in front is overflow, so it's a bigger river than one might think. WAG... Grand Rhonde at Hilgard S.P.?

Correct body of water Grande Ronde, however incorrect landmark. Very close though

I had never followed where the Grande Ronde flowed through, didn't even know I had driven by it in La grande, looks like from the size it must be above La Grande, Hwy 244 or further up stream ?

Followed it all the way to the Ski area, must connect to Grande Ronde Lake.

Interesting that on Google maps the river name is misspelled with an H in it (Rhonde) for a few miles around La Grande then back to the no h spelling.

While I was cruising the map I found something I want to explore in a few months.

Not certain what constitutes a 'Landmark' but the canyon hillside and size of river could be near Troy or Boogan...

would this be around the RR bridge where the Grand Ronde and Wallowa rivers come together?
