Calling all Garmin 2610 users........

Let me start by stating that I know very little about GPS.

Anyway, I have a line on a special offer that's limited to four 2610's being sold for £299 tomorrow morning, new electronics store opened today with some grear deals. Usual UK price is £500 - £550 minimum.

I'm sure I read that the 2610 is preferable for bike use compared to the 2620, something to do with vibration etc, I'm sure I read it on this very site recently?

Is the 2610 the way to go? Any downsides that I should know about?

I'm not convinced that I need GPS but at that price, it's worth a look. If I don't like/use/need it, I can always sell it on & make a few ££ along the way.

Contructive criticism, based on experience of the 2610 appreciated

Go for it. Great price and an excellent product for bike use. It is the same model that BMW sells under their "Navigator" name except they add a few extra buttons on the side. The 2610 and the 276C are probably the two best Garmin GPSs for bike use. The 2610 has "soft bottons" so it is a little better for gloved hands. As I said: Got for it.

I have the 2610...it or the 276C are the generally agreed upon two best choices for motorcycle use. You are correct about staying clear of the 2620 for use on a motorcycle.

Criticism of the 2610. The screen can be difficult to see in bright sunlight...make/buy a sunshade. If your are a real offroad mud seeker...the touchscreen will probably suffer some scratches. The 2610 does not save your "tracks" like my former Garmin V model did which I miss sometimes. Other than that it's a nice unit...still waiting for that perfect motorcycle GPS to hit the market.

Sherpa... do you mean like breadcrumb tracks? My 2610 does... love going on organized group rides with a super secret route and recording the whole thing for later. My biggest gripe is that it will only save 200-300 miles since it samples too frequently and (as far as I know) cannot be set at a different sampling rate.

For broad daylight visibility, I've found if you mount it real high - above the clocks, and within the GS windscreen - the screen face can be basically vertical and much less subject to sunlight washout. Even better, with it mounted in that position, is nearly in my line of sight, so minimal eye movement is required to see it. I can actually monitor if a >90 degree curve is coming up with a split second glance... saved my hide a few times.

I was GPS skeptic for a while, but just like electric vests/liners/gloves, I will never go back.

Thanks for confirming that the 2610 is a worthwhile buy. Better get resed & head the 30 miles north to try & buy one.

Snapper: What are the other instruments on display in the photo you posted?

I believe that can be changed in the setup menu. Change it from auto to whatever larger sampling rate suits your needs.

Can ya give me a step-by-step hand here then... I looked again and still can't find a menu to change the tracking sampling rate on the 2610.... I assume it's not on the PC side/Mapsource, is it?

(BTW, I'm up to the v3.5 upgrade. v3.9 is out, but only mentions immaterial upgrades/fixes.)

Top tip - Always keep up with the latest upgrade for your unit, Mapsource and USB drivers. I have sorted out several loading and connection problems for chaps on UKGSer by getting them to upgrade to the latest software and trying whatever they were having a problem with again. It's free - I'd just do it...

Your track sampling rate fix isn't something I have experience/knowledge of, I'm afraid.

Mike:)

Failed to get my mitts on the 2610. Only four available & that days special offers were first offered to those at the front of the queue & they all wanted Garmins.

Note to UK residents - this was Maplins opening a new store in Banbury. If you ever hear of one opening near you, check it out. The bastards at the front of the queue had been there since 0700 for a 1030 opening time though.
