Evolution beats revolution?

On the surface -- which is to say, on the the nose -- the McLaren had to make the fewest year-to-year changes. And today they were comfortably quicker than anyone else.

We should wait until the big tracks to see how much effect the Mercedes duct technology has. Won't be a long wait, Malaysia and China will reveal all. However, worth noting that Melbourne has two DRS zones, so maximum opportunity to use the duct.

I was wrong about the Red Bull exhaust solution, I'm happy to say. I surely did not want another year of Vettel.

Nice to see Michael outpace Rosberg, even if it was only because of an obvious error.

And finally, nice to see the rear ends sliding out again. Feels like things are back to normal. I have a terrible memory: what was the last rule change that had the immediate effect of making the rears loose? I know it was within the last 10 years, just can't remember what it was.

If you're not a Ferrari fan.

I'll take payment in RU credits.
I guess I'm the only one that remembers why Kimi was paid NOT to race.
Doh!

it was 2009 wasn't it? When they reduced the width of the rear wings.

But the uber-diffusers made up for it.

The planks and the increased ride height took a ton (literally) of downforce away, ditto with flat bottoms. Grooved tyres were supposed to have that effect but the diffuser nuancing had already started planting cars in corners like they were on rails.

I found a Wiki page that lists rules changes year-by-year.

The one I'm thinking of is when they finally banned traction control once and for all, in 2008. Remember when a driver could gas it and stay straight, even though half his wheels were on wet grass? Crazy. We saw a lot of rear ends going sideways coming out of corners that year.

Interesting the difference between qualifying pace and race pace.

McLaren were quick/quick. But both Red Bull and Ferrari were more race quick than qualy quick. The Red Bull in particular was surprising. The top four were all pretty close.

Mercedes, unfortunately, were qualy quick but didn't have race pace. Used its tires too quickly?

Melbourne can sometimes be misleading. It will be interesting to see how the teams shake out on the big tracks coming up.

I see Red Bull have a light system on their lollipop. Haven't they learned from Ferrari?

HRT came a long way and spent a lot of money for a few practice laps.

Business as usual there. This has been their MO for what, three or four seasons? Ridiculous that Ferrari, with their budget and resources, have not been able to make progress on this.

I'm glad F1 is back, but maybe its because I'm tired--- but man that was a boring race.

Didn't get the DVR programmed in time to get qualifying. That is the fun stuff.

F1 Drinking Game

After watching the replays leading up to the Aussie Grand Prix last night, we've decided Seb is a drinking game all by himself but we've opened it to other rules.

Rule 1: Drink anytime Vettel says "obviously"

Rule: 2: Drink anytime Matchet says "GO ON, BOY, GET 'EM!!!"

Your turn.

One more.

Rule 3: Drink anytime Weber gives away three places on a start. Finish your drink if it's five.
