Good thing he doesn't need any snow tires....

I just wish DrABSBrake hadn't been banned. He'd give the true answer in multi-color font.

I have not measured anything, I used the formular to get a clue of the resistance of a rigid body with respect to a change in its rotational motion. (moment of inerta between the rear and the front brake disk as they are different in size, as larger the diameter as more moment of inerta you get and therefor more brake power.)

The given force specs are only theoretical and for comparison.

(Sadly I have forgotten to give the unit which is: kg x m²)

If you are planning on driving loads of miles the Jetta might be better mileage wise.. but it is going to need a timing / water pump service ASAP (if it hasn't already had one)... then there are the wear and tear issues at around 80k (brakes tires etc)... Throw in the HPFP issue and you have a nice car that could go another 100k with no problem... or not... I don't know... mileage is a bigger deal to me than a couple extra model years...

I agree with A-Bone, also as lover of a (different) MKV Jetta TDI.

Just test drive them. I test-drove a Passat sedan of that vintage and found the driving experience to be unsatisfactory, but I really wanted to like that car. The 2009 TDI is of the new common-rail "clean diesel" variety, which seems to be good except for some people having failures of the high pressure fuel pump ($1k+ to replace) which can leave you stranded. TDIClub would have more information; I haven't really kept up with it since I have an older PD TDI.

sorry to hijack the hijack....

we just "gassed" up for the third time - at almost 2000 miles. Averaged 40 with mixed highway/city.

No issues yet, just grins.

while rolling down to Orange County yesterday, at 75-80 it gets ~45

Apropos of nothing (other than the general VW-ness of this thread), here's my '08 Jetta. With 65K miles on the odo, it's been a great car so far. Only a rear brake job at around 35K miles. Silky smooth, relatively powerful, and still gets a solid 25-26 mpg in mixed driving. Not brilliant in any one area, but a very solid performer in most. Best bang for the buck in it's segment back in '08, in my humble opinion.

Got my shortshift kit from Diesel Geek this week..... the shift action is very "rubberband" like which I hate. If you have ever driven a Honda, that shit will bug the crap out of you.
The Diesel Geek shifter is supposed to lower the throw slightly and tighten everything up quite a bit, not to mention replacing lots of plastic bits with stainless bits.

Not sure when Ill get to installing it, but ill try to make a short video...

I wonder if they make an easy aftermarket mod to HID lights in the 2012 Passat?

I test drove the 12 Passat today. Pretty spunky compared to what I was expecting. Overall I was quite pleased.

2 downsides for me. 1) the navigation requires you to be stopped to mess with it and 2) no HID lights.

Im sure they will.... the headlights are kind of a letdown. Especially with what seems like a arms race for biggest headlights going on

There is a thread on myturbodiesel.com about a retro-fit of the factory xenons. Options in several other countrys on the Passat.

My TDI Golf came with the Adaptive Bi-Xenons. Seems odd they wouldn't be an option on the Passat.

This is pretty cool.... its the process that the cars are put through at the new billion dollar facility in TN.

It includes a few things that are pretty unique including dipping the entire car into an electronically charged paint bath which is supposed to fight corrosion much longer than other cars..... but I dont really need that in CA.....

Which mainline mid/full-sized passenger car has HIDs as available equipment? That's gotta be a pretty short list.

Nav is nice, but virtually every one of the auto manufacturers needs to have a come-to-jesus moment with it's pricing.

Bumping this old thread for an update. You still liking it? What real world MPG are you seeing? Any quality issues spring up?
