Beyond Starbucks is a great concept other than being a perfect name. If I'm not mistaken AdvRider.com is founded by bunch of GS "big bike" riders. And there are tons of big bike riders out there following this web site and probably wishing to join us one day. All they need is a little encouragement from people like us, because many of us here were in their shoes some time ago.
I have my 990 for 15 months now. First 3-4 months I didnt put my tires on dirt at all. I didn't know anybody to help me, to show me the way to do things, and I was scared. But look at me now. I dont wanna miss any opportunity to ride on dirt. I am sure Fudgypup has a very similar story too.
Thanks to great people of AdvRider, I am a dirt addict big bike rider now. And I know there are many others out there waiting to take their first step out off pavement with their big bikes.
Come join us in this thread because real fun starts "Beyond Starbucks"...

I remember back when I joined this group, Herrhelmet and I about two years previously turned in our "little" bikes (Husky TC 450) for Adventure bikes, because we wanted to ride more and trailer/truck less.

When we bought our Dakars, all we did was ride and camp everywhere we went from DV and Norcal, to Baja, Nevada and yes, we gave up performance to be able to ride more and access further places.

But alas, after five years of giving up the performance, I had a hankering for greater agility, hill climbing ability, the ability to access harder to get to places, really just more high performance fun again.

The key is to have a big bike and a small bike. And to be able to have fun riding both and not strictly be locked in to any type of riding in order to do this.

I miss the good ol days when 6-12 of us would ride to far off places and sleep in the dirt, drink tons of booze and not shower for days. And the smallest bike was a 650.

Someone should plan a ride to a place where hotels/motels are not an option at all. Back to basics, but I'm not giving up the 450 ever again.
I'm planning to get me a small bike here soon. Maybe the Husky 449 or 511. Then I'll better understand what I've been missing all this time. Everything I know about dirt I learned from small bike riders.

"Someone" will be doing just that here; multi-day rides w/no hotels. Sounds like this Baja trip coming up might be the first one?

Like Gary, I'm interested in riding to go places and see shit and I think the bigger adventure bikes are the way to do it.
No shit? Show us some pics of that fatty! You and TBarstow can spoon at Warped VIII now!

Yep, we used to do that type of ride all the time. Alot to be said for it. Stop where you want, camp where you want, drink where you want. And, the best views are never had from a motel room anyways.

Windrat, Herrhelmet and me in the Utah backcountry a few years ago.

Only picture I have so far. I test rode it, bought it, rode it home and left town. This weekend I finally get to play with it:

And definitely no spooning with TBarstow because spooning leads to forking!!

I'm gonna hate to see the 800 go away. Hopefully the Husky can hang on some of your SCAR-y rides.

Don't be fooled. Fudgy rides his big bike like a small bike. And the first time I met him was at Starbucks!

Well, I started riding my KLR on longer trips in 1999, about 5 years before I found ADV, so I guess I'm IN, too.

Mr. Sexy, Moab, June 2000....

Plus, I just picked up a newer big bike.... Gotta keep up with the riding buds, ya know...
