KTM 690 Enduro headlight upgrade options

I've got a 2008 KTM 690e with the H4 60/65W bulb which was oem that year. Even though it blows the later models' puny 35W? incandecent POS away, more light is always a nice thing. Baha Designs makes an HID upgrade kit that fits the 2009+ headlight bezel, but not mine so I'm trying to figure out what it takes to change my headlight/mask set up to the later models. Since I haven't actually seen a later model 690e personally I'm hoping you can tell me whether the later model mask bolts right up and the turn signals, etc work with it and whether additional KTM hardware is needed to make it work.

I did order a 50/100W H4 bulb to see if that is an adequate enough upgrade, but running the 100W high beam with my electric liners and accessories is an overload so I'd have to upgrade the stator I think. I added a voltmeter to the bike to keep the charging situation in check.

Thanks!

Do you want brighter for daytime visibility or night time driving?

Have you tried these:PIAA Intense White 55w=110w 4100k
http://www.amazon.com/PIAA-10904-H4-.../dp/B000MG40QW

They work well enough I have in my 690 & 1200- they aren't HID bright but not as expensive either

I haven't tried that bulb. I did order a 50/100W H4 for better trail lighting. Stock works pretty OK for street riding at night. Did you find that PIAA to be significantly better than oem? BTW if you interested, if I can't make this HID kit work on my 690, it's actually designed for the KTM EXC bikes like yours and I may sell it. It includes the stator upgrade instructions and a regulator. Nice kit. I paid about $200 for it.

Very good article on HID upgrades here:
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...nversions.html

And the author also has an article on superbright bulbs here:
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...uperwhite.html

Basically, all I would recommend is:
-consider upgrading the wiring loom to include relays (look at the relay article on same site)
-consider higher wattage bulbs (but they may melt things)
-look at aux lights to supplement the main

I went the aux light route on my 525 and fitted LED ones. I am fitting a nav tower on the 690 so am moving to projector lamps. I am also changing to a dual relay system to minimise wiring losses. I have found the 690e headlight to be good though (2008 model)

Thanks Dazed. I read through the articles and they're very telling. I'm interested in the products you're looking into for the 690. I haven't seen projector lights for this bike.

I installed a Candlepower 50/100W H4 bulb today - still not nightime so not sure if it's a significant improvement. Has anyone encountered issues with them (melting, blown prematurely, etc)?

My upgrade includes fitting a nav tower and a rallye fairing so its not a simple or cheap upgrade. I am using the Hella 60mm modules (http://www.rallylights.com/Hella_60m...p_Modules.aspx). The lights will be like the 690RR when its done

I did a bi-xenon HID lamp conversion from DDM Tunning on the stock '08 690 E headlamp. Has been working great for a year. The fitment of the HV coil was a little tricky but got it to work. I have a 35W, 5500K version. Can not beat the price, and runs cooler than incandecent with less power draw.
Only issue I have is the Hi beam switch does not work, but the Hi flash works, too lazy to debug.

Do you have this setup? Runs OK with stock stator output?

Any HID or LED headlight setup should draw less power than the stock halogen headlight.

Yes to this but if I had mine to do over, I'd go LED, the dual HIDs with ballasts are too heavy.

Aw shoot, I wish I'd seen this sooner. Good luck with that light, TT HID's are junk. Yes the light is great and works well but that won't last long. The bulbs and ballasts will go out soon You'll become tired of boxing it up and shipping it back to TT. TT bought mine back after a year and more shipments than I can count on one hand YMMV.

Geoff at Trail Tech!

My mother used to say"if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". But these guys really pissed me off, especially that ass.
