KLR 650 Strange CDI glitch

After spending ages working on my 92 Tengai, rewiring, new stator, coil, pulse coil, etc etc I got an early model CDI (87) without the extra yellow starter wire. Bike starts and runs fine.

Got a new CDI (non genuine, from and Ebay supplier) fitted it, and no spark.
Got a second new one from a differrent supplier, and no joy thier either.

All the plugs and wires on all 3 cdi coresspond with the wiring diagram, for the life of me, I can't work out why 2 brand new CDIs would not work. Pretty unlikely I have two faulty new ones.

I would love to try them on someone elses biike to see if they are ok.

The early model one I am running now is a loaner and will have to go back to its owner sometime soon, so I would love to sort this out.
