It's worth to me 8k.
Anything remotely similar is going to be the same money whe you are done with it.

Would you trade your two bikes for that one?

Ive ridden a 91 GS, I guess function isnt the criteria for buying one or pricing one. The one I rode was low miles in perfect or close to perfect shape. I know they have all the soul and wonder of the world in them but.........it was a droning 50hp flat twin with kinda clunky shifting, weak brakes, average handling at best. It was an antique the day it was built was my take on it,you look at other bikes built in 91 and they have quite a bit more on the ball.
I know they are one of the holy grails of airhead people,I guess for what they go for now, riding one wouldnt be the reason for buying one.

Not for me, it'd cost way less than that to do all that work, but someone paying shop rates, that's probably what the shop has in it, based on parts and $80/hour. They might take $7,200 for it, maybe as low as $6,700 if they sit on it for a while.

that's kinda scary, A dealer putting in redLine trans oil.
Yikes! Ask a REAL trans builder what they think of redline. Oh you might as well sit down and get comfy, you'll be listening for a while. |

Some people have more cash than time. We are all a bunch of cheap bastards who would rather chew glass than pay someone to replace a cable or spark plug, much less pay full retail for either of those parts.

When I see such high prices for labor and work done on bikes I cringe and think damn that much for just an easy (fill in blank), but that comes from a guy that knows what's really involved, not from a mechanically ignorant/challenged perspective.
So $8K for a mechanically challenged buyer might be worth it........but some people are so scared to work on anything mechanical. I can't pay people for mechanical repairs for two reasons 1)why pay someone lots of money when I can do a better job, 2) I can't afford $80/hour and that takes me back to point #1.. I don't doubt the dealer has $8K in it, strange thing is if this bike were being sold by and individual down the street the price would be $5.5-6K. Of course if the bike were being sold to the dealer then $3,800 to $4,200 maybe.

I can't decipher that. Are you saying they're very good and perfectionists so they spent a lot of time and $$ on it to make it perfect? Or, they are sub-par? I've never used them but I ride though that area on occasion. T. |

you can find better

You CAN and will find better. There are just too many variables at this mileage and price... The only way a GS of this era is worth 8k now is if it is a primo Classic with low (<20k) miles. This is a shot of my purchase with just a bit of meticulous cleaning (and other parts that aren't included in my opinion of the value/worth of the listing in question):
