LC4 640 Adv. Tail Light

How on earth do you remove the tail light on the '03 LC4 Adv? I took at every screw and nut I can find, and I still can't get it off... Suggestions???

Thanks as Always Amigos!

Tail light bulb holder is accessed under rear fender,
twist and pry off the rubber dust/mud cover - easier if warm.
The tail light bulb holder is beneath that rubber cover
The bulb holder is also a rotate and locked in fit ,
fiddle with it and you will get the idea.

BTW, the bulb holder is not that well made,
the brass flat springy bulb contacts crack and fail, resulting in intermittent light. Holder not available separately only with entire $60 tail light assembly.

I modified my bulb holder with an all metal higher quality auto one from Pep Boys. Works great, keeping the basic original system. All mods are internal and not visible. No more intermittent tail light.

The tail light mod is post here, try this link:

I'm thinking you mean the lens, not the bulb...

There are bolts sandwitched between the fender plastic and the tailpiece. You can see them if you remove the license plate light, but the entire fender has to be removed to take out the rear lens. A real PITA.

BTW - I don't see your name on the list for the WARPED trip - what's up with that?

You got that RIGHT! THE LENSE! I am trying to install LED bulbs. So, I got that it is a PITA, but how do you do it? Remove the rear fender first? What a sham design...

A sham. Yeah, I guess that's one way to look at it!! It's almost like they put all that together as an afterthought. It's a very odd setup.

Keep in mind tho, that once you get the lens off, there's only a small hole in the back to work with. Guys that have made LED rear lights have had to mod the entire assembly.

Anyway - if you pull the fender/license plate holder, you can get to the lens bolt.

Bugger. Wednesday will be prep & pack day so I guess I'll miss ya. But I think you're going to get all the desert riding you can stand .

We'll get together next time. Enjoy it though. Hope the winds calm down for ya. It's been a real wet and windy time lately.

I am sure there is a direct replacement l.e.d. tail light bulb now.

Tail light yes, turn signal no. Click on the Kuryakyn link a few post ago to see an 1157 equivalent bulb. Works fine in a tail light app, still need an electronic timer type flasher, or a in-line resistor to fake out the stock flasher.

Fitting a resister will just up the current again, you could lose the flasher unit and build a simple electronic version using a basic op-amp set up.
