Just discovered this thread. Looks like fun. I'll see if I can dig up some tracks from around Rough River Lake.

Loved Old Railroad Bed rd. John. I just stopped and took a quick look at that bridge. Pretty long but flat gravel road.

Email me some tracks. Been exploring but I'm sure you have some ideas.

I'll think I'll make it over to this ride---and see what I can find interesting on the way.
See you there.

If your bike weighs more than 400lbs. You might not make it.

I talked to Joe Eddie King...

...who filled me in on his current motorcycling status. He sold his DR-650 after trying to ride it in one too many AMA trail rides and burying it in bottomless mud holes so besides going over to the "Dark Side" (riding quads) he's building yet another ultimate lightweight trail bike. As usual this one is going to have a stroker motor, mega-expensive suspension and who knows what else. My hope is that this one actually works unlike the last 25 or so "ultimate bikes" he's tried to build since I've known him...

While on the horn with him this AM I told him about this ride and he said he'd be there, even if he has to drive the Geo Metro--which is almost a motorcycle (actually more like an enclosed four-wheeled scooter) although he's going to do his best to try to borrow/steal a suitable bike by then.

If anyone wants to harass him I have his girlfriend's email address. PM me to get it. Note to Big Dog--he said he got tired of waiting for you to ask him to dance (or go ride to Alaska, Mexico or wherever), one of the main reasons he sold the big DR--and he sounded kind of heartbroken...

As I mentioned over on the Indiana Ride Thread I made my reservations for one of the rock cabins today. Mark made one for himself as well. I spoke with the owner "Ralph", a really nice fellow and he said he'll supply wood for a fire on Saturday night. Mark did mention that particular county is "dry" so if you're so inclined you'll have to pack your own hootch. Cabin space is limited and the owner said a credit card will hold it--and cancelling sounds like it would be easy in the event we had an ice storm that weekend and had to move the date.

One of the fellows helping Mark with this ride laid out a tentative route south out of Paoli and word is the northern end of it follows high ridgetop roads with lots of long-range views and as it gets closer to the river becomes very twisty as it snakes up and down through the hills. It's all paved but at the southern end he said it's mostly one-lane roads as it approaches Mauckport. Supposedly the southern third of the route resembles a paved outdoor moto track!! Sounds pretty cool and maybe an opportunity to dust off the street bike you never seem to ride anymore...

Your bike will be bigger than most--------you'll be surprised at the number of 250's that show up.

It is a misnomer to think you need horsepower when off the pavement---smaller---lighter bikes really shine on this stuff.
It took me 35 years to figure out ---the bigger the bike and the more horsepower it had--the slower I go.----offroad that is.

Hey Mark,
Yea I know that the smaller bikes are better off road, but I wasn't sure how much of this ride would be off the pavement.
Do you know if there will be any trails or just gravel roads?
I checked out your web site, 7000mi to Alaska on a 250! Very cool! So I guess my 400 can make it 300 miles!
The only concern I have with my bike is wind blowing me around on bigger/ busier highways.

So who's coming along???

mbabc and I were chewing the fat about this ride and he asked how many victims I thought would show up. The fellow who owns the cabins was inquiring as well so I reckon a poll is in order...

By the way the "Dunno yet" option means you plan to attend but don't know what you're going to ride yet.
