120-70-17" tubeless TKC-80 to be avail. after the new year

new size coming down the pike for versys, uli, 1200 multi, 1050 tiger, super-motos and other owners plus those wanting to adv their street bikes.

180-17 also happening too.

up to now for 120-70-17 TL size it was just MT-60 or Distanzia mottards or stuff a heavier 130-17 TL on there. Now there is another knobby option. i'm guessing if conti leads other tire mfg will follow. i'm sure the 1000 versys showed the trend is growing using that size up front and enough want to ride it in the dirt.

i knew about the pirelli.
i'm guessing we'll see a few more mfg jump in too.

The Trail Attack is even officially approved for the Buell Ulysses X and XT. Just checked their German home page. You can download the certificate. Important within the EU.

I really liked the road attacks on my STT, I may have to try a set of trail attacks on my uly. Currently have scorp trails and they're OK. A TKC would be pretty cool, although I think I'd kill it (or it would kill me) fairly quickly.

if Michelin would make an Anakee II in those sizes I would be all over a set as well.

What kind of mileage would one expect from these new 120/180-17 D-S tires, not the TKCs, I have a good idea of available mileage on those ? Compared to the Road 3 is there really any offroad improvement worth going to a Trail or Attack.
My SD likes the dirtroads sometimes and a bit more grip would be fun...

My experience with the Pirelli Scorpion Trails is that they are a heavy duty road tire. I love them, and have gone through 3 sets, but they don't do off-road any better than most other road tires. Great on pavement (wet or dry) and good mileage though!

And good God! A set of TKC's in these new sizes are going to run damn near $450 at that ProCycleDepot. Do people really spend that much on tires???

some do, but my guess is most will use the front tck-80 only and use a less aggressive longer life rear tire.
with other bikes, many use a tkc-80 front w/ a k60, anakee 2, tourance or 705 rear.
i use a tkc front and mefo explorer rear on my DR w/ great results.

the tkc is gonna be a huge jump in offroad front tire performance compared to everything except the pirelli mt-60. the ride is not gonna be as smooth, as expected, but if you ride a good bit of dirt you'll be happy to have it on. in other sizes the tkc lasts as long as other front tires if you flip it around 1/2 way through it's life. on some bikes like the versys, the wheel is symmetrical so you just quickly flip the whole thing.

Had the TKCs on my 640 in 19-18 and liked the front, not so much the rear. Can't really imagine running them on my SD.

Spending far too much replacing tires as it eats rears, was going to try road 3 with hopes of more longevity but also was thinking about MT60 on the front and the longer lasting Scorpion Trail on the rear. Ideally, a set of Mt60s with a 180-55-17 with a compound that would last 5000miles would make me happy

Looking for more bite for dirt road fun while maintaining road manners.
I want my cake and eat it too...

i know the 120/17 conti isn't out yet, but can anyone compare the conti trail attacks to the pirelli scorpion trails?

i'll be in the market for sv650 sized tires pretty soon. pirelli says 95/5 % for the trail, what's the / on the contis?

I liked Road Attacks about as well as the scorp trail on gravel/dirt roads. Haven't ran a trail attack, yet. The scorp trail did last a little longer on the rear, mines at almost 6k and it's bald. My normal mileage is about 4500 on a road attack but the trails are deeper and possibly a different compound as well so they may hold up as well or better.

Much thanks, Eakins ~ a TKC in the 120/70-17 size is really great news.

So many bikes have been limited [effectively] to nothing looser than hard-packed gravel roads, until now, by lack of a reasonably competent front tyre in 17 inch size. The MT-60 was the only real choice . . . and that was more a 90/10 tyre: a distant second-place to the TKC (TKC being 70/30 or 60/40 in comparison?). The other so-called dual-purpose ones mentioned [above] . . . well, one look at their tread pattern says it all ~ they are 98/02 tyres as far as front wheel usage goes : but would make a fair rear wheel choice for decent long life, as you say.

Great to be able to throw on a TKC on the front of the average road bike, and take off for a holiday including stretches of dirt road ~ without needing to worry about "unexpectedly challenging adventures" on looser gravel or minor sand or [very minor] mud.
And if you are considering getting that next bike, then it opens up the choices quite a lot . . . if you are not so heavily into the dual-purpose scene as to be demanding 19 or 21-incher fronts.
Versys-1000 and suchlike, are looking much better.
Also, many small or medium road-bikes become quite attractive for all-rounder use, in view of their favourable low weight advantage in rough/slow conditions.
