Not sure if this belongs here or not but just when the teams seem to be resolving all the last minute problems and having a small amount of time to relax before the off Dakar Team GB have had a load of kit stolen from their accomodation

From their twitter feed :

We now have half a day to replace months of prep and gear so looking for local motocross shops :-? 52 mins ago December 30, 2011

1 day before Podium Day and we are nearly wiped out- no boots, braces, trousers, goggles, head cams etc A big list & big mess :-( 55 mins ago December 30, 2011

Hi all - we were getting through registration nicely when disaster struck! Our villa was robbed - laptops, cameras etc & RIDING GEAR! 56 mins ago December 30, 2011

Being Brits and with Patsy Quick involved I am sure we will see them sorted and on the start podium - thoughts are with you guys !

That sucks. But that's a lot of stuff to steal. Surely someone saw something? I'd hope authorities can help them quickly.

El Bigote rears his ugly head early this year.

What about getting the loose equipment from the guys not able to start due to injuries or ransomed motos?
Is Airborne Andy down there again? He could cough up his gear, maybe

It seems like if the story of the theft of Team Dakar GB's stuff found its way into the local media somebody might rat them out. It seems like stealing from a Dakar racing team would be too high-profile a crime right now.

The Good with the Bad

30-Dec-2011 | RallyRaidReview

So far, the 2012 Dakar Rally build up seems to be one of extremes. On one hand, nearly all reports from scrutineering seem to be of competitors sailing through with relative ease and a minimum of difficulty. On the other hand there are the plights of the South African riders, those enduring lost or late shipments, and those scrambling to prepare delayed machinery.

As if those ups and downs were not bad enough for many to endure, the Desert Racing/Team Dakar GB team of Tobias Younger and Jago Pickering have gone from one extreme to the other in the course of a few hours. From the highest highs of passing through scrutineering cleanly and that feeling of finally clearing all hurdles en route to the adventure of a lifetime to the lowest of lows upon returning from scrutineering only to realize their rented villa had been broken into, robbing them of crucial riding gear, cameras, laptops, braces, boots, etc…

I'm just returning to the computer and discovered the terrible news.

From Toby's latest tweet it looks like they're on their way to the local motorcross shops, I just hope they can find what they need to get going.

Please though, if you're in the area and can help in any practical way please get in touch with Toby directly.

I'm all the way back in the UK and feel gutted and helpless in equal parts.

It's quite ironic that at the Dakar Team GB launch, event last month, there was a Q&A session with Toby, Jago, Patsy, Clive (Zippy) Town, Nick Plumb, Stan Watt, Craig Bounds, Tamsin Jones and Chris Evans where they got round to comparing the South American Dakar to the African Dakar.

Whilst there was disagrement over which was the harder, the one thing that was agreed on was that at least you didn't get the constant theiving of equipment in South America, that was always a feature of Africa.

Mind you that was during the race not before it had even started

Let's hope the guys get sorted in time.

Good thought - the Dakar seems to have really hit home in South America and seems to be well received by a significant part of the local population - just look at the crowds on day 1 last year.

It is also undoubtedly important to the local economy ............

Terrible news on the theft. I hope the authorities can help. As has been said, that's a lot of stuff, somebody must have seen something. Knowing how pro Dakar SA is, I wouldn't want to be in the thieves shoes. If they're caught (hopefully) they're toast.

Best wishes to the competitors either getting their gear back, or getting replacements. I have no doubt any Moto shop they ask will bend over backwards to help in any way they can.
