Garmin 276c help please

I have a 276c that has worked flawlessly until today when the PC suddenly did not recognize the gps. The com ports are configured the same as always, so I reinstalled the usb drivers. No luck. Then I ran the Mapsource software and plugged the unit into a different computer to see if the usb was working properly on the pc or the gps. The Mapsource software on a different pc still did not find the gps. I figured it might be the cable so I switched cables. Same problem. In sum, I have installed the latest software from Garmin, uninstalled, reinstalled, (drivers too) ran an old version on another pc, and changed cables.

My guess is the software inside the GPS is buggered, but I have no way to access the unit since the com ports dont seem to work.
Am I missing something? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Taki

Did you try resetting the unit?

To the factory settings? Yes. Is there another way perhaps?

Thanks

I had a similar problem when i upgraded to software version 3.20 and the USB drivers.

I can't remember but after fiddling with some files and updating them, it now works.

You should speak to someone at Garmin to help you out.

Check the communications protocol that the 276 is set to. It should be "Garmin". The Mapsource software is trying to talk Garmin protocol and if the 276 is set to something else (like NMEA), the two won't communicate.

My best guess so far is the Gps unit is not "broadcasting" its connection to the pc properly, or the Mapsource drivers are not working properly so they dont recogize the gps.
My problem is I have already updated the software on the pc and the gps to the latest versions therefore, when I update the drivers the wizard tells me that I have the latest drivers. So I uninstalled all the software and reinstalled everything with the same problem. The only software that I am unable to alter is the software in the gps unit because I am unable to establish a connection. I have also tried the gps unit on another computer that has all the old versions of Mapsource, same problem. The usb cable has been eliminated as a culprit.
I hope Garmin has a solution because I have wasted too much time guessing and really want to use the unit next weekend so I'd hate to ship it back and wait if the problem is solvable.

Thanks for all the input so far

Protocall is set to Garmin Data Transfer in the Serial Data Format window
In the Transfer Mode window I have it set to Host

I have just encountered this same problem but, I am not enough of a techno geek to offer any real insight as to causes or solutions.
Computer does not recognize GPS.

I loaded v3.20 as soon as it came out and everything is working fine.

I am running Mapsource v6.5 and Windows 2000 Pro SP4

Same setup as you, worked for about a month flawlessly, the while I was preparing to download a route it suddenly couldnt find the GPS.

When I speak with Garmin I'll post the diagnosis.

Hi Taki,
I was gone all weekend---but my wife said you had left a message---boy you are having some problems. I don't have any suggestions other than the ones others have given you. Sounds like the unit needs repaired--bummer. I've had about 6 Garmin units and never a problem--and I have beaten them up badly.

From the looks of the files you sent me I believe your units were thoroughly field tested. The good news is I was able to get the waypoints in before the problem, so I have to look for the route myself. Not so bad. I'll send the unit back after the trip.

This may sound stupid, but have you powered the GPS off/on while connected to the PC? Mine gets like this sometimes and power cycling the GPS often gets it to connect.

Also does the GPS say "USB connected" at the bottom of the screen?
