I stopped for a bio break and upon returning to the bike, the mighty 950 wouldn't start. Lights, camera, no action! I tried pushing the 520 pound lead sled down a small hill, but not enough speed and street bike tires just left some short skid marks in the gravel. I'm only 5 miles from Sundad, I'm sure the guys will get tired of waiting for me and send someone looking for me [KTMSER]. Luckily, some 4x4 and ATV guys came by and gave me a pull. They were surprised I had my own rope, long story...

Here's the troop waiting for me at Sundad.

EsconDeasy tries to capture the Nightstalker. Dude, why is your bike running??

I decided to ride out, not knowing what was going on with my bike and fearing the worst. Checking my odo, I didn't have enough fuel to get me all the way back home. I stopped in Gila Bend to top off the tank, there'd be enough off road enthusiast wandering through town for me to get another pull if I needed it. I closed my eyes and pressed my thumb against the square red button, BAAARRROOOMMM!! NO WAY!! Let's get this party started!! The KTM ran fine for the 80 mile ride home. Pulled up to my garage door, turned off the engine, pressed the magic button one more time and...NOTHING! Wow, who's the lucky dog??

232 miles door to door for me today.

I probably should put a snorkel on this if I keep coming across puddles like this. Even a knobbie on the front would have been nice and I am just glad I didn't drop it in the deep sections........

Terrific ride, guys. I wasn't expecting the return route to be that much fun. Although I was stressing about freezing on the ride home (like I did in the morning) it was nice and warm. I had 324 miles on my bike when I rolled it into the garage.

Aaaaand lets wrap it up with a picture of Nightstalker

Put a new battery in my 950 today.

Still won't start.

Pulled the starter button off the handlebars and cleaned up all the little bits and pieces that fell out. Managed to get it all back together with no parts left over and it fit back where I removed it.

Still won't start.

Fixed the clutch switch that hasn't been working for years. Found that when I had replaced the factory clutch lever with one that was reasonably priced, a dimple that actuates the clutch switch was missing. I put the original clutch lever back on and wah-lah!

Still won't start.

Next I'm going to check the starter relay, which actually makes the most sense, which is probably why I thought of it last. Would have been easy to check while I had the skid plate off replacing the battery.

- Update -

Pulled the starter relay. No obvious signs of trama. Pulled the fuse, cleaned the contacts, turned relay end over end several times while scratching head, reconnected relay, pushed lightning-bolt button on handlebar and potato-potato-potato (ok, I know only Harleys go potato, but it's a v-twin so that's close enough). Can't say that I'm satisfied that I didn't find a smoking gun, but I'll just have to keep an eye on it.
