Cool2 Taking the Tenere to Tucson....

Daughter's graduation in Tucson and Dad's fun trip to get there.....

I'm planning on flying from Wisconsin into Orange County, CA, then picking up the Tenere and riding to Prescott the next morning.

Details:

3 May ~ Leave Orange County at 5-5:30am and I hope to get to Prescott by 7pm (see route map). That way I can crack open a cold one and watch the 8pm sunset.
Camping suggestions please!

4 May ~ I plan on hitting the road around 7am on the twisty road to Tucson.
Anyone wanting to ride with me down to Tucson is invited!

8 May ~ heading back

I definately see that I need to head through Prescott and head down east of Phoenix through the Tonto National Forest.

Do you guys have any suggestions on a cool route that I can get some light dirt action on the way?

Your route looks good. If you took to many dirt cuts than you would kill your time. The last part after Oracle is dirt into Redington rd. Nice Highspeed if it hasn't rained. You can also go the backway up MT Lemmon than a nice paved twisty into Tucson. Should be open by MAY.

Keep us posted just may have to join you.

For camping, there are three places that come to mind and one that I would recommend - Lynx Lake campground... it's not too far out of your way and pretty scenic.

If I may make a recommendation on your route...
It's hard to tell from your map but it looks as if from Prescott, you will be taking the Cherry Road cutoff (169) down to Camp Verde. From the Lynx Lake campground, that would be 40.2 miles. Instead of doing that, why not take 89 out the north end of Prescott Valley, over Mingus Mountain and down into Jerome and then south back to Camp Verde. It would only add 13.5 extra miles to your trip and would include an awesome stretch of twisties over Mingus as well as a trip through the now revived cliffside ghost town of jerome... all paved mind you.

Another thought...
Right now, just out of Camp Verde, you are planning on taking the General Crook trail up and over to Strawberry.

While (from A to B) this is 31.5 miles of a fine paved stretch of road, scenic, in the pines, somewhat twisty and historical, may I provide an alternate dirt temptation...
From the Camp Verde junction of I-17 and the 260, 10 miles east on the 260, turn off right on Fossil Creek road. It's an easy but twisty dirt stretch of 26.2 miles and comes out in Strawberry. Food for thought...

Thumb So many options..

There seems to be a lot of great roads to ride! I orginally thought I would just take 10 back to Cally. But now, I may have to come back a similar way with different roads!

I will definately go up through Jerome and on Fossil Creek Rd. Those sections look awesome!

Thanks for all of your input guys.

Thanks samthg

Pretty cool places on that site. I was thinking on the way back to CA I might hit old route 66. What roads should I take up to get up there?
