Heated Gear

Can I run my heated gear off of my acc. connections? I have a pair of Gerbimgs gloves and a Gerbings jacket liner. I have two 950 ADVs and want to set them both up for the gear. I will be running a dual-temp heat troller.

The acc circuits are rated at 10 amp fuse protection each. Normally 80 % of the circuit can be used or 8 amps times 14 volts = 112 watts per acc circuit.

10 Amps is too light. Run an SAE plug direct to the battery (use for battery trickle as well) and tie in there.

I run a Gerbing jacket liner & Tourmaster Synergy gloves, connected via Gerbing Temp controller, off the dash socket. Gerbing lists the draw of their liner @ 77 watts, and gloves @ 27 watts. The 10 amp fuse should be good for under 120 watts @ 12v. Theoretically.

I like grips (Oxford) for 45 and above, heated gloves below that.

I've only got heated gloves with my road bike, but the wife's bike (F800GS) has heated grips. For my riding, I'd rather both. The heated grips cool off as soon as you take a hand off them, but they're very convenient. The gloves are more crap to deal with, and the non-heated grips still soak the heat away from my hands (my thumb never feels "warm" with the gloves alone). For temps in the 30-40F range, either alone is okay for me on short rides (less than an hour). But when below 20F, 30 minutes with gloves alone is where the comfort ends for me.

The wire gauge on the ACC wires are very small. Suggest using the Gerbing kit directly from the battery.

I like the gloves much better than just heating the grips for many reasons. Add one of the bigger hand guard covers when it gets really cold, less wind=more heat. The Malcom Smith flexible covers work good and are easy on/off.

Run it in your garage and find out the hard way. JK. Check the fuse rating first and make sure the gauge wire can handle the rated amperage/wattage that your looking to run. Im running my dual heat troller through the supplied fuse and wiring harness to the battery. No issues at all and Im running 90w heated jacket, heated gloves, and heated boot insoles. Now when my wife goes to hook into the "Y" that I added to run her heated jacket and gloves then well see if shit hits the fan.

Food for thought. Get the rated power consumption and google "watt to amp calculator" and a link will come up. Thats what I use to know what fuse to run in my setup. Now for proper wire size Ive been lazy and havent checked. But thats what fuses are for right

Geez - I gotta ride up the Sierras to the 7,000 foot level to get down in the 30s...I forget how darn COLD it gets in the Midwest, etc. We whine when the temps get in the 40's...ha.

I got heated grips, and the tourmaster synergy vest. For me the key is to keep your core nice and cozy and it appears that the KTM has plenty of power to offer.
I don't normally ride on the street,,,but when I do,,I prefer lane splitting.

Gerbings will tell you it's always better to run heated clothing directly off the battery. I'll vouch for that! I believe there are two accessory outlets for the 950/990. One is switched and one is not. I ran my Gerbings non-switched and grips switched. Prolly OK, but I had a failure in AK on my Gerbings. Turns out those connections have to be cleaned a lubed annually.

My other bikes heat my Gerbings off the battery direct.

extension off of ACC wire


I was wiring an extension from my ACC wire behind my headlight to my glove box yesterday. I was surprised to see how thin these wires were. Actually, there was a splitter from the ACC wire creating one set of connections for the socket connector on the dash and another set of connections dangling, labeled, and unused. Is this from the factory? This is what i used to run an extension into my glove box for my 90w first gear jacket liner. The wire I used was considerably thicker gauge then then ACC wire I extended from. Will this cause me problems?
