Those pics are like porn to me, I love finding mining relics. That's a lot of the reason for wanting to explore around the Aleghany area, lot's of the little "Y"s on the map that denote mine tunnels. Mostly on active claims in that area, I know, but still some stuff on public land. I've heard about the stamp mill ruins near the Kanaka Creek crossing.

The bit about overstating the potential reserves of a mine to attract investors reminded me of this operation on the Foresthill Divide:

http://www.foresthill-exploration.com/page2.html

Somebody had the rights to three old previously worked claims and was advertising them as "fully permitted mining operations". As of last year I noticed all the equipment was removed from the sites and the no tresspassing signs were down, no sign of activity since. I guess they werent able to attract the investors they wanted, even with the current gold pricing.

Doesn't exist, it's like a Unicorn, just rumors

Sweeping around the area on Google Earth is pretty interesting, lots of good panoramino images, looking foreward to getting my boots on the ground.

Open Roads and Routes

Rode up to Downieville and Sierra City this morning with some friends. After lunch they went back home via 49 and I opted for some high country just to check on snow, pretty sparse for May 1

Galloway Rd is open from Downieville to Henness Pass Rd.
Henness Pass is open from Hwy 49 to the pavement at Jackson Meadows.
Bowman Rd is open from Jackson Meadows all the way to Hwy 20.
Graniteville Rd is Open from Bowman Reservoir down to the pavement.

The only place I couldn't get through was RD 41 aka Pinoli Ridge, good size snow drift about 2 miles west of Jackson Meadows. There are other problem areas further up so it might be another month for that to be passable unless we get some help from the 4x4s

I'm planning to ride from Folsom to Georgetown and then spend a few hours on the trails up there - Saturday, May 11. Haven't yet figured out what time I'm leaving, but I'll be "dual sporting" it by riding my XR650L there rather than hauling it in a truck or trailer as so many others do.

Let me know if you're interested in going along.

If it's just me, I'll leave when I'm ready to. If there are others, I'll actually have a schedule and meeting places and all that.

Thanks for the beta!

Another sad snow year. Gonna be a hot one I think. Might have to cave in and look at installing some A/Cs this year in the house... Maybe...

The road from Foresthill through Robinson flat and up to Soda Springs is now passable. I was riding up there today and caught up with a guy from the county who was clearing the last major obstacle. There was a huge red fir down across the road on a slope. It was in a position that would be difficult to go around, and this guy had just finished chainsawing though the log. I dragged a piece out of the way and it was good to go. There are some other broken logs on the road but they are all passable. All the water crossings are low due to the dry year.
I was also able to ride the upper connector near the North Fork bridge over through the game refuge and down into the upper French Meadows drainage.
This pic is the last creek crossing on this section.

I finished things off by riding back across the connector between French Meadows and the Soda Springs road (across Red Star Ridge).
All the upper sections are almost fully clear of snow up over 7000 feet. The big issue now is downed trees and this stopped me 2 weeks ago on the Western States trail near Little Bald mountain. Time to bring my collapsable bow saw.

Good to know - may hit it Friday.

Quoting Oldtrucks above "The only place I couldn't get through was RD 41 aka Pinoli Ridge, good size snow drift about 2 miles west of Jackson Meadows. There are other problem areas further up so it might be another month for that to be passable unless we get some help from the 4x4s"

I rode Pinoli Ridge yesterday
and was able to pass on the Husa570Berg. Had to duck under one tree and squeeze between a snow drift and steep road edge .. probably still passable but more challenging on a big bike.

Thanks for the update, I wasn't going to try Pinoli again until after the 1st of June

There is one section that holds a drift that usually stops me, sounds like the same spot you squeezed through on.

I just got the day off! Going to ride dirt roads, trails up above Foresthill. I'm ridin a WR250R, it will keep up with anything dirt or street. I'm starting out in Colfax, no particular time. Anybody up for it? I can pretty much anywhere any time.

WST is opening up

I rode the Red Star section of the WST today and it's all passable. I tried last week but was stopped by some big downed trees. It looked like a crew had been through and cut them all out of the way. I suspect this is in preparation for the run at the end of month. I rode downhill (east to west) for the first time today and found it about equally challenging as the uphill (west to east) route.
I meant to loop back around and do the little bald mountain climb section but the heat put the zap on me and I had to bail on the single track after Red Star and just do the dirt roads.
Anyway, the upper single track sections should be good to go.
Just remember to bring lots of water. It's getting hot as hell even at the upper altitudes.

We are heading to the coast tomorrow morning, leaving Grass Valley at 9am, 4 day ride.

We're riding DR650's, is that enough notice?
