Just up the road from Big trees, at Dorrington, you can get onto Forest Road 52 and take a long route south all the way to Beardsley Lake and 108, and make a return north on 5N02. You can also run up 4 and turn north at Black Spring or 7N09 by the Cabbage Patch Caltrans maintenance station and do some dirt road loops around the upper, eastern end of Winton Road. If you go further east on 4, towards Ebbetts Pass, Highland Lakes road is a worthwhile side trip, occasionally rough, 7-8 mile road heads south to a scenic lake area in the Carson-Iceberg wilderness.

Sounds great, thanks! I'll start looking these up on a map.

Went up to the Foresthill area Sat. to look at the fire, apparently mostly under control. Couldn't get too near because of road closures.

Near China Wall:

From Ralston Ridge:

Near hell Hole on FR21:

Got some good riding in in spite of the smoke.

Out of curiosity, Has anyone taken bowman lake, through Heness Pass all the way to NV? it looks fun, but is it that challenging?

I don't know many roads up there

The section of Bowman Rd from Bowman Lake to Jackson Meadows is a well traveled road, nothing difficult, only a few rocky sections. Once you get passed the end of Bowman Lake you've gotten through the most difficult section and it's just a field of baby heads you could drive a mini van through.

Henness Pass from Jackson Meadows is asphalt until you cross Hwy 89, then it's a smooth rock/gravel road into Verdi. Between Jackson Meadows and Hwy 89 the old section of Henness Pass parallels the newer asphalt so there is a dirt/gravel option but it's a bit cut up and you can find yourself off route if you miss a turn.

I'm planning on taking a weekend with a buddy on his KLR, I'm running TKC80's so I have decent traction, But I'm unsure of good routes out there.. I mean, total range is 250 miles on road, and about 150 offroad fuel-wise with what we bring with us

Any good routes? I can handle some single track believe it or not.
I'm fine with anywhere within 2 hours of here to get to the area. I'm located in Sacramento.

You have a Garmin GPS?

I wish I had a garmin, I can convert almost any maps, and I can read the standard GPX with my GPS.

PM an email address and I'll send you a GPX file. It looks like a 230 mile loop from Roseville (80 and 65). Goes 80 to Colfax, out 174 to U Bet/Chalk Bluff to 20, then up to Hwy 49 at Yuba Pass on all dirt roads. Then down 49 to Downievile, back on dirt into Nevada City. Plenty of sight seeing along the route, should be an easy two day loop with no real technical riding.

Gas is available in Colfax, Downieville, and Nevada City so there are no gas issues. Plenty of camping up near Jackson Meadows or Milton Reservoir. Food available in Colfax, Washington, Sierra City, Downieville, and Nevada City
