Much better...

But... in my haste I neglected to check piston ring orientation. A search suggests that the sky is again, falling. What now, people?

It doesn't really matter in the medium term. The rings aren't fixed on the piston & rotate anyway. If they are aligned & especially if they are aligned towards the bottom, you might see some oil smoke initially. Probably have better things to worry about. Have you got all your parts back that you had farmed out for machining?

Were you getting valve guides done?

Yes, K-liners. I'm interested in how those turned out.

I Talked to my engine reconditioner about them when I picked up my heads & asked whether he had any preference. He said there wasn't much in it but would probably go with proper guides. He was welding & doing some pretty trick stuff on a top stockcar head before the nat champs so felt reasonably confident in his abilities & advice.

I think one issue has been the amount of slop the standard new BMW valve guides allow. The k-liners could be potentially set to a much lower tolerance.

I have guides waiting to go in, but am waiting on Igor's report on his head work. If it's positive I may also go k-liners.

IIRC the engineer bloke measured the new guides & was happy with them. I seem to recall it was an issue I was pondering at the time.

I run K liners on the r90 race bike with the original valves. Have done over 20 races at high revs. Just saying.

It was more a question about the Engineer doing the work, rather than whether K-liners were good. I wanted to make sure the guy did a good, timely job. He was having his heads twin-plugged, the K-liners fitted, & other work to his final drive.

En route!

Just a quick update on Igor's behalf - he's currently riding the bike up to Auckland to be crated up at Jenners tomorrow. It's a bit wet and miserable out there... but needs must.

What time did he leave Penny? When I called in yesterday he was still frantically assembling. Hope it has all come together. The spot tracker is still showing him at home!

Actually good point - who wants to travel around the world when it's raining? Leave it for another day I say.
