New 276c came today!

Woot! Got a new toy!

My digital camera is in a buddy's truck so no pics. The instruction manual is 3/8-1/2" thick :zzz Time to read up on how this damn thing works...

Now I can find my way back from SF next weekend.

You played with it long enough to figure out if you will need topo for your ride out in the desert?

Nope. I just got the City Select uploaded. Got the GPS set to show me dirt roads only. Gotta get some data in there for the roads to show up...

Hey! While I've got yer attention, do the Garmin memory cards interface with anything else or am I screwed into buying theirs? Along with that, how much memory does your average track take up?

As far as I know, You're screwed, proprietary memory cards.
Tracks don't take up much memory, but I'm not sure just how much.

As far as I know, You're screwed, proprietary memory cards.

Glisson (aka gpsgeek.com) has some 3rd party ones, but last I looked they didn't make a 256MB one. Just checked, and they aren't in stock either.

Tracks don't take up much memory, but I'm not sure just how much.

The track logs have their own RAM inside the unit, they do not use the memory card.

I forget how many points the 276 log is, but it's darn long, espically if you're willing to turn the resolution of the track logs down a bit. I think I've had at least 600mi worth of track log marked every 100ft. Oh, and each time you power the unit up/down it marks that in the track log, so when you upload it later it's really easy to find your stops.

Also the 10 or so "saved" track logs have their own memory. 1000 points each, if your log is longer it just condenses it down to 1000points, you loose some resolution. The desktop SW didn't do this for me, it instead truncated it.
