I would prefer closer to home, to check out some of the areas in our backyard. Has anyone rode in the River Lakes Conservation Area/Lake Poinsett? Looking on Google maps it looks like a huge open area, there must be some trails back there. Anyone up for checking them out Sunday? Or have another suggestion?

I gotta stick closer to home than Ocala NF, as of word right now with the family. 0800 Saturday morning at the diner in Meritt Island is my tentative plan. There's a lot of stuff to explore in the wildlife refuge right there on the island. It's mostly hardpack.

River Lakes/Lake Poinsett doesn't have a whole lot of legal riding, from what I've seen so far. Wickham Rd. goes out that way. EZMan and I have ridden dirt/sand to where it dead-ends at a grassy hiking trailhead.

If you don't have GPS, you can meet me around 0700-0715 by Krispy Kreme on Wickham, in Melbourne. I live right down the way from there. That should give us enough time to mosey on up to the diner in Meritt Island by 0800-0815.

I'll be the human glowstick with black pants and a blue/white DR.

If you guys want some nice pics, there are a LOT of birds and other critters out there to see. Bring a camera and/or binoculars.

If some of yous guys want to ride earlier, for the best pics and cooler temps, we can catch up with you on the island a little after roughly 0900 (post-breakfast), by the fishing pulloff just SE of the bridge coming over from Titusville's Garden St. and US1. We'll be the peoples on motos.

We can start with the Gator Creek Rds. (which are just past the fishing pulloff) and then work our way towards the haulover canal, by way of Kennedy/Courtenay Pkwy N, exploring the open sidetrails along this route until we get to the play area along the NW side of the road/canal junction. BTW, this is a pretty laid-back, easy-terrain, exploring-pace, pic-taking kind of ride. For faster stuff, there are better places with less people hiking/fishing that we can do another time. I wouldn't hesitate to attempt this dirt on my UJM, but I would be picking my lines more carefully.

Feel free to peel off for home or other obligations at any time. Just don't expect a kiss goodbye. I'm not European, and more importantly, you don't know where my lips have been anyway.

Won't be out riding tomorrow, but Causeway Diner has some decent liver & onions if you are so inclined. Probably not on the breakfast menu, but you never know....

Meet at 8:00

Our track - PM me with your email if you want the gpx file. Google earth can really show the details.

Nice ride today. Thanks to Kommando for coordinating it to make it happen.

The long strip in the middle is the Shuttle Landing Strip at Cape Kennedy.

We missed the part highlighted in Red. Wonder if it was open and useable?

That's pretty cool.

A lot of that IS open, and it can be BEAUTIFUL. Sometimes you see HUGE flocks of birds out there in the water, and even the occasional eagle, osprey, or other bird of prey fishing.

There are MANY routes out there around the lagoons that we didn't see today. There are a lot of side roads and trails that we passed today that are open too, but most don't go very far before ending at a gate, a lagoon, or a CLOSED sign. Even some of the short ones can be fun to explore though. Live Oaks Rd. comes to mind. Just be mindful of ditches and other hazards of outriding your sightlines.

Cool routes.

Live Oaks Road - that's the one I was trying to remember the name of... That's where the southern end of Shiloh Marsh comes out. Sometimes Shiloh Marsh is shunted out at the short road just above Live Oaks, too.

I'm leaving the house @ around 1830 (6:30PM) to ride Sandspit's dirt route from Valkaria to Malabar, if anyone wants to meet up.

'Just got back from Sandspit's dirt route from Valkaria to Malabar. He understated it a bit. There is a huge playground down there, just south of where Marie comes back onto pavement. It's a bit sandy in places, but a smaller bike and/or sand-capable tires can get you in and out OK if you're lacking-in-skill-yet-determined. I saw a few people in there on quads, a UTV, and a good-sized dirtbike. I think they were a little surprised to see me back there on a plated bike without knobs. The DR650 was dancing a bit at street pressure, with my worn front DeathWing and rear K761, but it was still manageable to go wherever I wanted. These were mostly quad trails, with a few mud holes, berms, roots, whoops, and blind turns. It can be really fun if you're up for it. I wouldn't recommend doing it at speed until you're really familiar with it though.

Thanks, Sandspit. That's a cool close-to-home place to play.
