I've been going since 1990. I don't spend much time in town but lots of great riding. Last trip ( 2006 ) I stayed at little campground called Iron Horse campground, www.ironhorsecampground.com It's next to Bear Butte and across way from Buffalo chip, and Full Throttle Saloon. It's quiet with a small bar and place to eat. Has showers. I was happy with it.

Sturgis tips
I've been going for around forty years, but not every year.
Here are a few observations. In the last 15 years or so I've NEVER ridden from Sturgis to Deadwood during the rally without seeing a fatal accident. This is in the daytime. Also never done it without having some bonehead do something stupid right in front of me. In Sturgis if you want to get somewhere go on streets a block or two away from the highways. In the Hills, take the gravel roads. Many are pretty decent and traffic is light. Get a Nat. Forest map to find your way. Quiet camping is in the National Forest. Usually a pump but no shower or flush toilet. Getting there from the east get on I90 somewhere in Minnesota. It is a rolling museum of strange as well as ordinary people. If you break down on the highway expect a VERY long wait before someone stops to see if you need help. I stopped to help a guy on a nice old Pan and he had been there for 3 hours. I changed the alternator rotor (airhead beemer) on the side of I90 with dozens of bikes / minute going by. Nobody stopped. In the hills if it is a fun road near Sturgis there will be a police presence even in the middle of the night. Actually the older boys told me about this. I have no personal experience. ![]() Flat track racing at night is fun to watch. Go ahead and try it. If it doesn't appeal to you you can always leave. |

Probably spelled wrong
Close to Devils tower, a nice days ride on wednesday of rally week. No Panty Wednesday I always thought was a high point of Sturgis. A small little town which is crowded as hell on that day. GOOD TIMES! |

Way over-rated. Unless you like seeing lots of un-experienced dead riders on the side of the road. Unless you worship the Harley Lifestyle, I say skip it and go ride somewhere else. Way too many riders who have no clue. Or riding skills, unless you consider drinking too many Beers and then crashing is your thing... Then it might appeal to you. It did not to me. Those were not my people there.

I went last year, had a blast. I camped at Glencoe, if you go to the back end its quieter, and more important plenty of shade trees! Its across from Full Throttle Saloon, so not so risky with the huge cop presence. You'll definitely see waaay more than u want to on titty alley! Yeah theres a ton of posers, so what, its your ride.

I've been going for 20 years and really enjoy it. Don't know why I enjoy it so much, kinda like slowing down for a peak at a wreck, morbid curiosity I guess. The last 3 years I've enjoyed it on the GS. Got to see areas which I wouldn't have seen on a road bike. Used to do the 110in with hangers and lost momentum with it when doing the mountains and didn't need the attention anymore. Love the sweeps in the black hills and the flesh at night is fun too. Wife hates going up there, (probably the real reason i go) and doesn't go, to righteous I guess, not me, I'm a pig at heart (but in great shape) which probably makes me a poser adv rider. Anyway, don't let stereotypes make or break you, cause it's still about the ride. Email me if you want a killer camp spot a couple miles from town, I'll be there sat-thurs again this year.
