Boulder to Durango Conditions

Hi, I have some work to do in Durango next week, Tues and Wed. I'm hoping to ride there and I'm looking for road conditions, particularly on the passes. I've taken Wolf Creek and Owl Creek, Red Mtn. before and would like to know what they look like now and the real-life forecast for next week. I'll be travelling Mon and Wed or Thurs. I've done the trip a # of times, but never this early in the season. Any reports are appreciated. If not on the bike, a crappy state vehicle with 2 co-workers that I don't have too much to talk about with. Solo w/ bike is a much better option. Thanks, Larry

Lots of snow, lots. About 170% of normal snowpack. I talked with someone who came over Lizard Head yesterday and he said about 4-5' of snow along the road. Red Mountain and Wolf Creek have a lot more. If you hit dry weather, the road should be clear, but there will be a lot of runoff, falling rocks, and cold. If it is not dry, it will be a bitch.

So long as the weather holds out as promised, things should be okay. Check out www.cotrip.org for road conditions. It's up-to-the-minute road conditions, and has been dead-accurate every time I've used it. All major roads and passes are covered. Between that and the weather forecasts, you should be able to figure out if you will be able to make it.

The front range is supposed to get some rain on Tuesday, but the south end of the state is supposed to stay clear. Even if there's some snow somewhere Tuesday, you should be able to find a decent route home, but it's your call in the end.

Thanks, my wife nixed my taking the bike. 7+ hours with 2 co-workers and about 1 hr. of meaningful conversation. At least I have an Ipod. A few weeks later and I'd be having a great ride. I guess it's "better safe than sorry." Oh well.

Thanks.

It's my staff/office that does this site.

Appreciate the good words. Mainlines are pretty accurate, it's the secondary roads, rural areas that are iffy, afterall we are still a guy behind a desk in Denver.

I realize as much whenever I'm heading out and consider it in my travels. But the conditions seem to be swayed more to the safe side - at least when things are melting off. Come springtime, I LOVE that site.

So, just how do you gather all the boonie highway info? I pondered that all the way down to NM 2 weeks ago.

One and a half days after a storm went through (April 1st)...

...and the roads were mostly dry as promised. Should we ever meet, I'm buying lunch.
