gulf camping.

I am hoping for some reviews and recommendations for some beach camping. Preferably in the eastern gulf states. I usually head for the mountains to camp on vacation but it is her turn to choose the destination. I am hoping that camping on the beach will open her up to camping a little more.

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated. We will be travelling by cage, and most likely hoteling it for a good part of the trip.

One of your first thoughts should about how to keep sand out of the tent.
If you've never before done beach camping, this will be a real learning experience.
You keep mud from being tracked into your home by some logical method.
Now, think fine sand.
Plan for this.
Space to move around inside the tent may be important to her.
Maybe get a tall 4-6 person tent for the first round.
Listen to any complaints she might have.

Besides sand, you need to be prepared for the wind. It can take your tent for a ride:))

not on the gulf but on the atlantic. JACKSONVILLE, FLA, HUGENOT PARK. www.coj.net got to parks. camping is $10 to locals, a little more fro visitors. campground is bordered on 3 side by water--ocean, tidal pond, st johns river. busy park on weekends, calm during week. this is the PRIMO NORTH FLA place for surfing, kitesurfing and fishing.

Wow!! All these "Adventure" riders and all you get is; keep sand out of your tent and watch for fleas!!

LFD, thanks for starting the thread. I'm considering a similar adventure in the next couple weeks. Let's keep this thread going, hopefully someone will chime in with a good location recommendation. When are you leaving for the coast? If I find anything before your departure date I'll pass it along.

Quintana Roo, Yucatan and Campeche are my favorite eastern gulf states. Alas, further south than you probably are interested in.

For eastern U.S. gulf camping I enjoyed tootling around Dauphin Island in Ala. and checking out Fort Morgan out past Gulf Shores on Mobile Bay. Plenty of state parks with camping if you cruise along the coast down 98 in the Florida panhandle. I stopped at Topsail something or other and it had tent camping available. I was staying with friends in Pennsacola so wasn't paying attention. Pensacola Air and Space Museum is definitely worth a look. Really nice. Others local to the area will hopefully have better camping info.

Best,
John Downs

John,

Excellent, thanks for posting. I think that's what LFD originally had in mind and it's definitely the type of info I was looking for. Much appreciated.

Regards,
Ken
