Moordernaars Karoo recce ride
The past weekend saw 5 Wilddog riders heading to the Moordernaars Karoo (Murderers Karoo) on a recce ride over 945km to set out a route for the upcoming WC Bash to be held at the end of march in Laingsburg, a tiny dry and hot Karoo town,
In spite of the 40 degree plus heat the group rode some of the finest gravel roads in the country plus technical mountain passes, rocky sections and sand and double track routes through the Anysberg Mountain reserve.
Laingsburg many years ago was swept away in a giant flash flood that left the town devastated when the raging torrent swept most of the town, cars, animals and houses down into the Floris Kraals Dam where the water went more than 3 metres over the crane on top of the wall.
The debris was swept over the wall into the Buffels Poort canyon and it all ended up nearly 100 km downstream on a farm called Buffels Drift.
The roads in the area we ride can change within minutes if a huge thunderstorm sweeps across the karoo to and the normally dry rivers turn into inaccessable raging torrents.
Also the surface of the gravel changes from dusty dry to a skating rink.
