KTM 690 Enduro - get 2009 or 2012?

do I get a used 2009 690 or wait for the 12 and get it new? The 2012 is a true 690 vs the 650 of the 09. The used 690 has been tricked out with 450 forks, leo vince exhaust, larger tank, 2K miles, and has had the fueling problems sorted and comes with stock plastics and tank. The owner is asking $7900.

AFAIK the upside to the used bike is:
lower cost
parts availability
some cool mods

downsides:
not the mods I'd do (I'd get the FMF Q4)
history of the bike unknown

My goal for this project is to have a desert bike that can do 150 - 200 miles and camp but is still a dirt bike. I have a Husky TE450 but the maintenance interval is too short for this duty.

2K miles is pretty low miles for an 09 so assuming the bike is reliable it would save some bucks. I have an 09 and love it. The 12 will make more power but the 650 motor makes a ton of power too. Only reason to buy the 12 might be that maybe some small issues have been sorted with the fuel injection but I have no idea if that's true.

Are a 2011 and 2012 the same ? Did they do any changes to make it worth spending more on a new 12 or just pick up a new 11 and save some bucks (not just price, but insurance and registration) ?

I thought rumor was the 2012 would have more improvements than just more power. Rumors...

think you'll find the 2012 690 is actually a 690 and not a 654 like all previous models

Do you think there is going to be some teething problems with the bigger displacement. One thing that comes to mind when I think about more CC's in the same package is the 450/530. A lot of people (myself included) like the lesser displacement for quicker revs and the slightly better handling that less moving internal mass (450=smaller piston) affords. Maybe the 2011 will prove to be a little sweeter then the 2012 over all ? I am just asking this not saying it is so.

I had a brief affair with a 690. I keep trying to make the little bikes into big ones and the big ones into little ones.

2012 690 Enduro R

The 2012 690 R will sport a 690 instead of a 654 CC displacement. The suspension is also going to change from the 2011. I want to set this bike up to be a long distance desert bike (giant loop bag, Lynx fairing). I can't find a new 2011 in California and any transport will run ~500 bucks. I will wait til 2012. Thanks for your input.

So in the mean time, is there anybody who has owned both the 654cc and 690cc models who can give us a comparison how the engine feels?

The first batch of USA bound 2012 models are not on dealer floors yet. Maybe another week. However, I read the 690 is actually the Duke motor of the last two seasons. The new Duke motor has a dual spark head, better fuel economy and some other refinements.

Anyone with more opinion on 2012 vs older models? Looking at a mildly used 2011 vs new 2012. I understand the 2012 has a lower seat height and is a true 690cc, anything else of note that might make one a better buy than the other?

I'm picking up a 2012 model tomorrow...I have a 2008 that has been trouble free since day one...I will soon be able to give a direct comparison between the new, bigger motor and the original...

Sweet, look forward to your thoughts. I like the 2011 model with the taller seat height but that issue is negligible IMO.
