The 2012 has:
- a better seat then previous models (still crap, but hey it's an enduro)
- it's a real 690cc engine (increased power)
- better headlight then previous models
- the seat hight is about 20mm lower then previous models (= less suspension travel)
- new side panels
- some other small improvements

Thanks Lucifer, I did get the chance to look over and sit on both a 2012 and 2011. I like the taller seat height of the 2011, being a tall guy. The slight bump in power for a bike that wasn't lacking power by anyones account doesn't do it for me but the better headlight is a bonus. Likely there are even better after market options out there. I suspect the suspension despite loosing a little travel is still among the best out there but would like to hear from those who have ridden both 2012 and older models.

I picked up my 2012 on Friday. Came off a 990 and wasn't sure if the 690 would get the 'ol adrenaline going in the power department. This thing flat out rips. I did a few 3/4 throttle runs up to 6k and it is easily as quick or quicker than my HP2 or my 990. So happy!

Giving up my 05 VFR, what a great bike really hate to let it go but it is time for someone else to enjoy it. I hope the KTM is at least half as reliable as the VFR as half of zero issues is still zero I'm keeping my big bike (GSA) as it is the two up beast of burden but it won't see the harder (relative to the GSA and my skills) trails anymore as this will be the 690s play ground. Should keep each other good company in my garage for many years to come.

more 2012 feedback?

any more feedback from the guys that's recently switched to the 2012?

is there no 690E in 2012?

I just spent a bit of time to dig around for the diffs, and it seems there's confusion, maybe you can help to clear that up...

So you are losing 20mm in ground clearance, none in suspension travel, and actually seated higher?

So I'm in the same boat as the OP. It's been a full year since the 2012s came out, anyone have any comparisons of the two? Thoughts on the whole used vs new 2012/13?

There appears to be no changes to the 2013. I'm guessing in spring when bikes get put to market, you may be able to save $1200-1500 on a '12 vs. 13 and may have a few aftermarket goodies.

Probably the best scenario if you are able to find '12 old stock w/warranty and then you know how it was broken in.

I have had a number of KTM's. In my experience, KTM steadily refines their products every year in some way. As an example, my 2004 950 was basically an unfinished product compared to the 2006 950. The latest 990 is sweeter than the 2007. The latest LC8's are the best ever.

My 2012 690R has 3600 miles on it. It has none of the fueling issues complained about in the big thread. It doesn't stall. It's smooth. It's powerful like a twin. Of course, I left my motor and exhaust system totally stock to insure I don't have those tuning defects.

Regarding discounted leftover 2012's, I think it would be hard to find one. KTM has greatly improved matching their production levels to demand. I put my deposit down in February. I did not get a bike until May, which was part of the second wave of shipments. I was quite worried I might not get one until it was too late in the season to enjoy it.

Not a problem with my '12 either.

Looking at some used 690s. Is it worth going out of the way to get the 2012 for the extra HP? I will be taking it on the highway quite a bit.

Also, I don't want to sacrifice on the suspension. Is the 2012 suspension better than the 2011 even though its shorter?

Can a 2012 be raised?

Ryan

For what it is worth, my stock 2012 walks away from both of my riding buddies who ride 2009's with exhaust, ECU mapping and airbox mods. I even went to a 42 tooth rear sprocket and my 2012 still seems to have a small advantage at all rpms.

How do KTM get the extra capacity in this motor? Longer stroke? Bigger bore?
