50k sounds very reasonable for this length of drive.

Whats the life expectancy of that in comparison with concrete???

My brother has a drive of a similar length & they used compacted rock

Probably ok if you don't have the Dusty Butt group roosting through it. I much prefer a drive that's properly sealed and can be kept clean and does not generate dust. I remember seeing all that sump oil sprayed onto the road, down south. Quite effective, but very Third World.

It would be a fraction of the life expectancy of concrete however prob 1/2 the price too as well as not so slippery in the frosty moments. There has been a fair bit of deflection as the main problem is the base coarse under the seal is bad & turns to mud during heavy rains (which we seem to get once a year). The water runs into a pothole at the top of the drive & sluices out huge amounts of foundation out of a lower hole 20-30m further down the driveway.
Our existing one has been there since about 1984 & has many big holes in it. I have patched them up over the 14years i've been here but there comes a time when things have to be done right.

Judging by the way a couple of companies haven't returned any calls for competitive quotes i would say they have their hands full at the mo.

For those on Androids like me: I use RunKeeper for human-powered stuff (walk, run, cycle) and Google's My Tracks for motorbiking. Both use Google's map base and import/export as Google Maps, Google Earth and GPS files. You can use RunKeeper for motorised stuff, but then it shows in your fitness regime as burning a heckuva lot more calories than you actually did! I'd like to record my orienteering as well, but using a GPS is not exactly in the spirit of the sport

Fantastic advice! But as I sit here swilling an outstanding 7-hop craft brew from a 2L rigger and munching potato crisps, I can't help but think maybe it's not what goes in but what I'm sweating out that's to blame here
