The 2012's are 50-state legal.

Update - Few weeks ago son and friend raced the Mexican 1000 stage rally aboard that new 350 dual sport. 1st in class; 4th overall bike; one broken throttle wrist early on the very last stage. Top speed in the Baja desert for that little thing was 92-96mph on the GPS (and they both spent a lot of time there). Stock gears and Michelin tires/mousse. 4 gal tank. Roadbook navigation.

Said a 500 would have been perfect. They needed to run just over 100mph to keep up in the big spaces. Was great everywhere else, though. Only one rear tire came apart at speed. Must've not been lubed enough they say. Next up; Vegas to Reno. The desert smite the New Englanders. Want more.

Pantah - Thanks heaps for the progress report on the 350. Any idea what the highest speed he can cruise comfortably on the tarmac? and at what throttle position it is (ie 1/8 throttle 1/4 throttle etc.)? Thanks.

Anyone else with some comparisons? or ride reviews comparing the two?.

I just completed a 800mi trek on my 350exc. Bike ran great. Ran a filter sock due to the dust, only issue with this made starting a little more difficult due to decreased air intake. The route was mostly remote 4x4 or powerline type roads, as a result our avg speed was 30mph. The 500 would not have been any advantage on this trip, except create more wheel spin and most likely lower mpg. My top speed was 78mph on a short pavement section. I geared the bike 14/48 which was just about perfect for this type of ride.

easy to say that online...

would help to know what your offroad background is, i'm sure the only butts you are wiping are that of your friends with way inferior bikes and/or skill, and not necessarily anyone with any true offroad experience.

glad i found this thread! My funds are slowly building up to be able to afford a new ktm but the choice between the 350 and 500 is a tough one. Right now i have a 250 xc (2 stroke).

a few things I need to point out that has been affecting my decision. The 500 is only 9 pounds heavier, and eventually i don't want to feel like I need more power out of the 350. I am also going to do a decent amount of road riding, and perhaps even some supermoto with the thing. My biggest fear is regretting getting the 500 because it is too fast, or looking for more power out of the 350

Does anyone have the 500 with the mapping switch? I wonder if the 500 with the mild setting is similar to a 350, then when you want to can switch to the stock setting and then eventually the "super" setting. ??

Decisions decisions....

Things I have NEVER said while riding my 350...."I sure do wish this was faster" or "I wish I had another 11lbs of weight and only a 65 mile fuel range".

Whats the range on the 350XC if you don't mind? More information the better (e.g. riding style, terrain, etc.)
