Isle of Man TT 2012
Figure I begin the thread since it's never too early. Just a little over 100 days away!
I actually plan on attending this year (my first! ) and was wondering if anyone else had intentions on going? My plans are set in stone. The passport is working and I'm talking to an agency to find me the cheapest route. Also need the boss to bless me off on the vacay.I plan to leave on or about the 26th of May and begin my return on the 9th of June. I'm going to try and bring the mountain bike fitted with panniers so I can get around the island throughout the race. If things start to work out, I wanted to see if anyone wanted to group together and share a campsite or other provisions. Oh, feel free to talk about the race, riders, points of interest, etc. |

Your first week there will be quiet - the practices are now only held at night now, I believe. You will have plenty of time to see points of interest on the Island. The people are unbelievably friendly, helpful, and fascinated that Americans would travel all the way there to see the races. They are also almost to a person remarkably well0informed about the racing and the racers - so many of them will ask you if you know any of the Americans who might be racing!
There are good places to eat, especially during the first week when the crowds are smaller. I had fantastic Indian food in Douglas that week, as well as Italian. Walk the Promenade, talk to locals, get out as much as possible. Have fun, and when you're done, come back here and post your pics!

Seeing the IOM in person has always been very high on my bucket list but your description of the place and the people made me realize it needs to be number 1 on my list!

Is there any organization that puts together a tour trip? Do you need to just do the trip on your own?
I have always wanted to go, but would prefer someone else do the planning.

Here's a wee thread of mine from last year.....
http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=733538 has some links you might find useful. I would advise against riding your mountain bike over that particular mountain, anything on two wheels doing less than 80 is dangerous.

Oh, and no less an authority than Neil Hodgson said whatever you do, do NOT ride a motorcycle on the course at any point during the two weeks of the TT festival - it is just too dangerous with too many hero-wanna-be's (both in cages and on bikes) out on the roads.

Isle of Mann TT reports from previous years
I have been to Isle of Man every year since 2008 when I raced it. I've only raced once but the experience has me going back every year as it's my personal favorite motorcycle event of the year. I've commentated my trip to the island along with filming & interviewing great motorcyclists of our time: Mick Doonan & John McGuinness. Hope you enjoy, more pics on my site.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I would love to go watch... but as little as i know about motorcycle history, teh riders, etc, i feel that if i ever did get to go the trip would be half wasted as i would have no idea who was who! :( I wonder how much a plane flight over is?

I agree. I rented a bike in London and rode to the 2000TT. A little CB500. I rode the island everyday including Mad Sunday. I never had any issues. Except maybe the ZX-9 rider who apparently took issue with a CB500 going round the outside on the Mountain. He kept passing me back on the straights.
