New to the Gulf

Hey,

I will be moving to dubai uae next month. From Canada.

I'm an off road/adventure enthusiast and rally fan.
Also a motorrad rider for other bmw riders out there.
I've been riding mostly with the new F8 and love it.... I ride it hard and It's gets real dirty... not just Starbucks ;)

Hope to see and ride with you in the new year, probably landing in UAE some time in January.

I'm still debating shipping my F8 from North America or just selling it and picking up a 650 range dual sport in the UAE as the F8 can feel heavy in the sand.... But great for everything else.

Vicks... I noticed you made the switch to lighter bike? but rode the 990 well

Can anyone tell me if an G650x challenge would be easy to find in UAE?

Cheers
J

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I've been in Salalah for almost a year now, and I'll be here for at least 6 more months.

Cool - I followed a few of your posts... nice bike indeed.
I'll PM you, wondering how difficult it was to get your bike in and registered.

Cheers

F800gs

Anyone out there riding an F800? How's the terrain out there for the larger mid-sized bikes or twins?

I see a lot of people ride smaller bikes in the sand etc.

Cheers

I'm riding an F800. It's an awesome bike. All bikes have their limitations, but for me the F8 is the best all arounder. I ride primarily off-road in the mountains and wadis of Oman and Hatta area, but I can ride the bike there and not have to trailer a dirt bike. It works okay in the sand and dunes with the right tire pressure and the know how and I can take it on 2-3 day adventures through Oman.

Very cool

I have an F8 in North America and I love riding it on anything but motocross.
Can take a highway anywhere and turn off....
Im debating whether or not to ship it to the UAE with me in January.

In fact I'm planning to do an offroad trip, so I can very well imagine that the vehicles are NOT road registered. We are planning to hit the dunes and then cross into the Hajar mountains.
What I'm worried about is that you can have an accident with injuries to a 3rd person even when not driving on road. Granted it is very unlikely, but it could happen and would have severe consequences, right?

What do you think?

Rgds,

Michael

Your concerns are very much valid Micheal but if' the rental agreement with the touri co. does not include a 3rd party liability inurance, the nyou can, like i mentioned earlier, always ask them to get it insured for around 600AED (not sure if they can get you a better deal on the insurance...)

have a word with them and see if you can work out an amicable solution.

cheers

I did ride the 990 quite a bit off-road but it was a pig in the dunes. At almost the same weight (if not heavier) and lesser hp, i can only guess that the F8 would be a worse pig in sand. A 650 dual sport will be better than the F8 but still a handful in the steep dunes and soft sand...

I bought my 530Exc primarily with the intention to participate in rallies... so, it wasn't just because i wanted a lighter bike.

Thanks!
So, what did you end up with ?

I haven't pursued the Suzuki, as I found a good deal on a BMW R1100RS on Dubizzle and got distracted buying it!

I am still interested, though, and will get to Musaffah soon to check it out.

good places to eat in Abu Dhabi

Unfortunately, I'm not able to ride while here but finding good places to eat has been a challenge.

Where are your favorite places to eat in Abu Dhabi?
