That's a shame. The XT1200Z is a useless fat pig, whereas the 660Z is a pretty good compromise bike, with easy servicing, great for 120 kmh road cruising, good for gravel roads and the easier sandy bits.

I know. It was one of the choices on my list. It just wasn't on the dealer's list here. In fact, there are no V-Stroms, no Transalps, no XTs available. You get to chose from GSs, KLR650s, DR650s, 800XCs and KTMs when it comes to new bikes.

Just finished prepping my bike...Saturday morning getting test/registration done!
Regarding the latest topic: If I were to do this all over again...990 for dual sporting, 690 for more advanced dual sporting, and the 500 for more offroading...I'm a big guy, so anything lower than 500 is taxing... I'd prefer to buy Japanese for the maintenance/costs/parts...but I also want to have a bit of sex-appeal...

Oman route still open??
Hi Everybody,
Fellow Dubai rider here (1150GS). I was wondering what options there are for completing the route shown below. Is it doable or will a rider get turned back by military checkpoints along the route? I've read that only Emirates or Omanis can get through there. Thanks for any info! Cheers....

Currently doing maintenance work on my bike but defn should be ready for a ride by 28/29. No off roading untill it gets cooler and would suggest some twisty roads near kalba OR al-ain (Jebel hafeet). Quote:

Guys, where can I get some service parts in Dubai? I mean consumables (oil, filters, brake pads, spark plugs etc). I do my own servicing and maintenance.
Is the BMW dealership my only option, can I get them in Gecko / Sandstorm / 2xWheeler or are there any more alternatives?

Been here quite some time and we do a lot of rides in UAE and Oman. The route you show is a dead end... well at least for us. You will need to return at the military checkpoint, whether you come from Dibba or Khasab. We normally camp on the plateau and then return over Khasab back to Dubai. BTW: the way to Khasab is stunning onroad and the offroad bit into the mountains is just great. Wadi Bih is nice too, but can get crowded. Can't wait for the season to start! |

Thanks Vicks and Snowman. I may have to try your route up to Khasab and check it out. The place looks amazing and the weather is getting good....
Cheers! |

whats your route plan on this ? I was thinking more like a full day ride to explore the nice winding road from fujairah to Khasab and back via the northern coastal road.

Friday's good with me.
The border crossing at Dibba is probably (still) closed for non-GCC citizens so we'll have to take the Shams crossing at RAK. The thing now is that the road from Shams is paved only till Khasab and then its just a graded track till wadi bih / dibba. The border crossing at Dibba being closed, we'll have to ride down to Wadi Bih / Dibba and then head back upto Khasab. Shouldn't be technial terrain wise but, a relaxed dual sport ride. Its around 120-140kms of off-road from khasab-dibba-khasab so we'll have to fill up at Khasab. Let me know if you /anybody else would like to do a proper dual sport ride or just a road part. MY opinion is we do the whole route when we are enduring the boring straight roads till RAK. cheers
