Good idea Bill

This is a great idea Bill------I've always felt that reading ride reports of people that have done the ride will give new riders so much insight into exactly how to prepare for the ride.
The Bike----the riding gear--the camping gear----and how that all worked out.
You not only find out what to do---you find out what not to do.

My ride report I guess was one of the first-----and I look back at it and the thing I wish was much better----- is the size of the pictures. That was way back when most everybody had nothing but dial-up

And large photos were frowned upon. I remember clicking on ride reports and then going out to the garage and put on a tire or two as all the pictures downloaded----dreadfully painful it was.

I also remember my inspiration to ride it was Clements Salvadori's (world famous adventure traveler) comment in the AMA magazine that it was the best ride of his life-------------holy crap-----I never would be able to travel the globe like he did---but by god this was in my back yard----------and off I went---I wasted no time in doing it.

I still have the original book "Cycling The Great Divide" above my desk----and it has stuff highlighted and underlined on about every page.

Cannonshot did a much better job of documenting the ride----and recording the gps track log then I did and he had the advantage of using big pictures and high speed internet.

Thanks Bill,
BigDog (AKA----Mark)

If your bike weighs more than 400lbs. You might not make it.

IIRC, it was stated as his best in 'North America'.

It's a Bucket List ride, for sure.

Ride the Divide

For those that have a Netflix account, look up "Ride the Divide" it's a bicycle tour of the divide that has some of the same route, Here and there you will recognize things mentioned in some of the CDR threads plus some of the flavor. A neat perspective. One of the bikes cost more than my KLR

The bicyclists route is where i originally got my route info from---and I think Clement Salvadori did too. I figured out their route---took out the places we couldn't go---like un-motorized areas and such---punched in the route into my gps----and rode it. The rest is history.
I think I recorded the tracklog with an old Garmin GPSIII.

Good idea Eakins!
Maybe you should title the thread "Is the CDR safe" Then it will be a big hit!

Nice idea putting the leads into a single thread. Hope it encourages more people to make this ride. I think it is well within the reach of most riders and is certainly an excellent and entertaining trip.

Many thanks to people like Big Dog and others for getting so many interested in checking it out for themselves.

i do find some irony that the 3 sticky threads in this sub-forum are about mexico and south and nothing for the US??? anyone else?

like i said, along w/ the TAT (and that should have a master sticky too) the CDR is the grand daddy western ride. this is ADVRider based out of the USA correct? why aren't we highlighting treasures in the US???
