Dont know the wheel weights before or after. Im gonna say the tires are lighter and the rims with thicker spokes may be heavier. 3.5 x 17 front with a 120/70/17 , 4.25 x17 rear with a 160/60/17. Stock hubs . Digital refrigerant scale , one wheel at a time with two 2x4s to level it. Add front and rear weights together.

Update:

I lamely set this one on the back burner for a long time, in order to build a similar plated XR250R as a singletrack bike, to start on an SL350, plus life, kids, work, etc. However, a small fiberglass thing on my leg has freed me up from having to endure the best riding conditions of the year. In any case, I have just started back up on it and will finish it over the winter.

Tubes in the tires or did you do a tubeless conversion to the rims? Just curious.

Tubes , but I'm thinking of doing the 3M sealant and going tubeless.

I'm considering exactly the same thing for a set of adventure wheels for the XRL - maybe a winter project.

Anyone end up doing this? I'm considering it on my XR650L and want to know if I'll regret it, or if it's worth the weight loss.

I didn't get it done but because of prep. I tried it once, and it took me a few times to get one of the rims sealed. But I went back to tubes anyway. I spent enough time off-road to justify keeping to tubes.

FINALLY getting back on this....

After an extraordinary delay, and after being quite well placated by my small bike, I am finally getting back on this. Not going full weight freak on things, just common sense. Also, I am aiming for a look that is an homage to 80s XRs.

Had some mounts fabbed for an XR250 oil cooler. Was going to go for the 400 cooler, but the 250 version is smaller and has better line routing:

It will have less cooling, but more room. Here is how it will look:

A while back I had decided to fab mounts like an XR600R for the tank, as they are more sturdy and have some addititional tank options (coming later). Started with square stock:

Machined these standoffs:

With something like this in mind:

Had OEM brackets, but my wacko anal fab guy (who is amazing) felt it was off a few mms on one side. So he just made a new one:

With this result:

Me-ee aaand Vintage...Vintage Jones, vintage jones, vintage jones.......

I have serious moto-nostalgia issues, that neutralize my judgement, usually in the area of math. Anyway, at a certain point I thought "HEY!! It's already 1980s technology, why not make it LOOK like 1980s technology too!!" So first, I started blacking out parts like the swingarm, and adding blue bits:

Then, I had a replica of a 1989 XR6 seat cover made. Major props to CEET, who get the whole vintage thing:

Right after that, I spotted something very, very rare on EBay: a COMPLETE NOS Tecnosel seat for an XR600, from the awesome Terry Goode. Terry operates a site called mxworksbike.com. Despite the fact that this is my THIRD seat....I grabbed it:

This last part is a little confusing, as I am going for mid to late 80s, and it is definitely mid 90s. But, I have two tanks, and will probably tie the Tecnosel into a white 4 gallon that I have.

Sorry for the OT stuff, I know this is a weight thread. But I am still on target for that. Doubt I will make 300, but I think I can make 310 easily.

Did you ever get the flywheel lightened?

I ride a little to fast and one day it may catch up and bite me in the ass but maybe not if I give it just a little more gas.

Your library is private...

Have you gotten a chance to ride it? Who did it and for how much?

This an excellent thread by the way.
