Colorado to Ushuaia 2013 plan

Hi Everybody,

I am going to ride a motorcycle to the southern tip of south america and back up, and i thought that it might be a good idea to put a thread up on here to get ideas and suggestions for the trip. So have at it.

When are you headed? I may be doing the exact same thing a few months before you. I am still not sure how far I might go this fall, but I am leaving Denver and headed south. Maybe I will see you on the road.

I rode from Santiago to Ushuaia in February in a group and here are my thoughts.

We did lots of off road on Ruta 40 so need good tyres but they were building a proper road
Watch for fuel we ran out once but spare was available
Scenery is amazing
Some places can be very remote but usually traffic around
Practise your Spanish

I also rode Peru and Nazca to Cuzco is an amazing road
Watch for altitude issues

Enjoy, I have videos of my trip taken from the bike

See you on the road

Also planning to head south from mid Sept 2013 from Victoria to Ushuaia. We will be 2up on GSA, planning on riding ruta 40 from Mendoza, but also wanting to ride la caretera Austral in Chile, have not figure out which to favor yet, maybe some of both. Will likely ship the bike back north from Brazil, Puerto Alegre or Santo. Planning for 6 months.

Will ride Baja this fall, as a practice run making sure the gear/equipment, bike, and riders are adequate.

I'll be leaving in early September 2013 for 6 months. Similar plan to yours it looks like but solo on a DR650. My point of departure will be Victoria too.
In the mean time learning as much spanish as possible and spending a ton of time reading on this forum.

If anyone could contribute to the discussion re. Caretera Austral in Chile and/or Ruta 40 from Mendoza it would be great, I am just starting to consider which section of each to ride.

Cheers,

Crossing the Gap

We were on the fence about flying us and the bike from Panama to Bogota vs boating it through the San Blas and making land fall in Cartagena.

It looks more and more that we are heading for a sail linky:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=759804

I have shipped my bike before, from Winnipeg to Amsterdam, and although the process is still pretty straightforward, doing by it sea requires less paperwork and procedures, all there is to it is another border crossing. Also not much needs to be done to the bike in terms of prep. Finally we want to see Cartagena and flying usually means Bogota which in turns requires a northern detour to go up to Carta.
