Klamath River Hwy 96
Is there gas in Somes Bar or Orleans on 96? Via Google Earth I can see that Orleans has a pump but it looks like maybe a cardlock deal or something. This is a must fuel spot on our trip. Otherwise we backtrack to Hoopa and try to make it to Etna for the next gas. Has anyone fueled up in Orleans? 24 hour deal? Thanks for the help.

There is gas in Orleans during the daytime, north end of town. Just pay at the 'gas station/garage/mini store' 50 feet away. Also gas in Witchepec (I haven't used it). No gas in Somes Bar. >"backtrack to Hoopa and try to make it to Etna for the next gasbacktrack to Hoopa and try to make it to Etna for the next gas" Where are you coming from ?

Comming from Orick via Bald Hills rd. We're doing a loop to Coos Bay n back on Memorial weekend, starting in Mt Shasta. State of Jefferson ride
Wttchepec has fuel? That would be perfect. Is it a credit card deal or does it also have to be open? We will be comming through on Memorial day so maybe they will be closed. Hope not.

Hoopa would be off our track, but if no gas on 96, then Hoopa it will be. Really hoping for Orleans or Witchepec.

I haven't gassed up there, have seen gas pumps etc... so I don't know. More that likely it's "pay in the store". Pretty sure that Witchepec has booze... so there is lots of traffic in that store from Hoopa. There is also gas in Orick... there is a market/station on the south end of town. If you fuel there, you should be able to make Etna... ??? (one hopes)?

We can make it to Etna from Orick with some sharing if need be. I carry a ton of fuel so the guy with the 2.8 gal might need some help from me. I charge triple price per gal trailside.
Thanks for the infoSteve in Shasta, We do a lot of riding to our east (the Dez) and mostly around our area. We are starting in Shasta because we are meeting riders there and parking at our friends house. Plus we dont want to rack up tons of miles/time on the hwy just to start the trip from home. I have some good tracks out of Shasta n back but you probably already know them. I can e-mail the gpx files if your interested.

Odds are that Witchepec or Orleans will be open. He can always coast the last 15 miles down into Etna tho... You know about the brewpub in Etna? Pretty good stuff. Turn south at the fire station on the main street... about 1 block. Can you send me your .gpx files on Shasta? We've ridden most of the roads in the NW coast, now expanding eastward. BTW.. want more dirt? As the east side 'pavement stuff' begins on Bald Mtn Road... there is a 'French Camp' road that goes south. (At the big fir tree). Take it and it will put you out in Hoopa! Then you will get to ride the outstanding road between Hoopa and Witchepec.

Pm me your email and ill send the gpx tomorrow when I'm at my computer. I like the French camp idea. I looked at that when I was building the route, but wasn't sure how much time we will have. I will load it and we will decide when we get there. Are you talking about the highway between hoopa and witchepec that is good too? Do you have a rough estimate on how long it takes to get to hoopa this way? We have a long way to go to get to shasta.

Gas in Orick may only be 87 octane. IIRC the store has only the one tank/pump.

Yes, the 10 mile section between Hoopa and Witchepec is awesome. >Do you have a rough estimate on how long it takes to get to hoopa this way? We have a long way to go to get to shasta." French Camp road is pretty nice. Hoopa from the Bald Hills road, dunno on time... maybe 30-40 minutes. Probably depends on how you ride. How are you going from the Salmon river (or Etna) to Shasta? Callahan to Gazelle is pretty direct, but if you go south on HWY 3 over Scott Mtn, take road 17 (Parks Creek?) over to I-5. Climbs up over the pass by Mt. Eddy. IMHO: Pretty darn nice stuff up there. Better than Callahan-Gazelle. Note: The north (Hwy 3) approach of Scott Mtn is a great highway too. Also, if you go further down Hwy 3 to Ramshorn Road, (mostly dirt) it will take you right over to Mt. Shasta. I have ridden from Eureka over to Shasta (and back) on the back roads... bloody 500 mile day.

I routed Ramshorn rd that takes us into Shasta. It turns into Fs road 26 that goes North and drops us on the West side of lake Siskiyou.
I originally bypassed Etna. I routed Cecilville instead, but found out that Etna would be the only gas between 96 and Shasta and I didd'nt think we could make that stretch on fuel. If fuel was'nt an issue We would do Cecilville. Quote:
My longest day was 8am start from home throught Nv black rock and to Summer Lake Or. Got in at sunset with a beer in every pocket from the last store I passed. 412 mi. mostly dirt. The hot pools never felt so good.

The high spots on the back roads over mt eddy and gumboot may not be open in two weeks. Last year it was mid June before you could get over some of them. Haven't made it out that way yet this year....maybe this'll be a good excuse this weekend.

This is only current to 5/7, but typical for this time of year. Often you can get around the snow late on the season, but sometimes you can't. If you're already pushing your gas..... S
