An other interesting place in Real de Catorce is the old cementery , it is over 200 years old .
The day we went to visit it , there were 3 musicos at the entrance gate offering their service

And this was an Italian guy who lived in Real and died in a bike accident in San Miguel de Allende
Que sigas rodando en paz, hermano !!!!!!

Great!

Hi GuateRider!

I'm planning a solo ride to South America from Montreal next october.

I'm a bit mad at you now...

I had planned on not wasting any time in Mexico and spend more time in Central and South America. Well, you and your nice posts-pictures are changing everything!!! I guess I do need to spend time in this, what it seems to be, great country!

Safe riding and keep up this great ride report!

Hola marcoue, glad you like the RR.
Mexico is a wonderfull country with great riding, food and people!!!
Take your time for it , you won't regret it!
Being able to get somebody to come to Mexico , is a great way for me to pay back something of all the goodness that I have received so far from this country and its people.

One of my favorite photographs ever taken of me was at Real 14.
This was about maybe 12 years ago. I really love that place.

Wirikuta

So far one of the most impressive experiences here in Real was our hike to Wirikuta , or Cerro El Quemado .

( Wirikuta is a site, sacred to the Huichol Indians high in the mountains of central Mexico, between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Zacatecas ranges.Wirikuta is the sacred land of the Huichols' deified ancestors. Huichols carry out yearly pilgrimages to Wirikuta or Huiricuta and collect peyote - a cactus containing hallucinogens - along the way. The peyote is eaten during special ceremonies and, they believe, enables the Huichols to commune directly with their ancestors and deities. The pilgrimage is one of the highlights of the Huichols' religious year )

The summit is a 2 hour hike away from Real de Catorce . We left early in the morning in order to avoid the sun at least at the first part of our hike . The trail went uphill most of the time and gave us some incredible views

At the exit of Real a dog started to follow us and he stayed with us the whole way up to the summit; up there he waited until we left and he walked us all the way back to our hotel

The further up we went, the better the view got.

Just a little bit under the summit we got to the place where the ceremonies take place and where the energetic circles are.

Being up there in the morning, alone before anybody else got up there made it more special ; we could feel the energy and peace of mind

From there it was only an other five minutes up to the summit , the place where the Huicholes leave their presents for the gods at a small shrine .

On our way back down we met first the caretaker of this place , a really interesting character who we had a long chat with and who gave us a lot of information about the surrounding mountains and desert , as well about natural medicine

And further down we crossed some pilgrims on their way up to the mountain to make some ceremonies

“If I behave well,if I don’t do anything wrong,if my soul and heart are clean and good, than the gods will see me with good eyes .It doesn’t matter if my hat is old and my clothes are broken. If my heart is good I will turn into the reflection of the gods, like a mirror…”
Huichol saying

(My translation sucks , but it should be good enough to get the idea over)

Seems like todays sunrise is announcing an other hard day at the office or maybe just an other reason to postpone departure from Real once again....

Working hard early in the morning on my RR, out in the cold, because Luisa was still asleep and after yesterdays long and hard hike she deserved not to be awaken at 6 am
