Florida bound

I'm gonna help out a friend in a jam and drive her to Vero Beach Florida in her Lexus SUV. We leave in two hours.
In return she agreed to have a UHaul hitch installed on the Lexus and rent a 5x8 open trailer. Together they cost as much as airfare home. I'll strap the XT on the trailer and we're gone.
From Vero Beach I'll ride over to visit friends in Apalachicola and points east from there. I figure at about central NM I'll turn north and make a run for Longmont and hope not to get caught out on the plains in a storm.
I'll try my best to bring Springtime back with me and I know I won't feel completely okay until I see the Front Range again.
After the last couple of years I've had, a little road trip is a gift from heaven.
We're sticking to the lower latitudes and freeways. If anyone wants to suggest things to see on the way back, especially along the Gulf coast, please feel free to share.

Have a hoot Bob!

Alabama: right in Mobile you can visit Battleship Park (hard to miss.. there is a battleship parked there )
Louisiana: Grab a tasty beverage on Bourban Street in the Big Easy?
Texas: Go ride around on South Padre Island? Rent a surfboard if the temps aren't too bad?
Then over to Big Bend and explore a bit?

In West Texas:
If you want a break from riding in Big Bend, do the hike at Panther Junction (2 mile loop?)... just remember you are going downhill the entire way to the view and you have to hike UP to return (800ft vert.. not bad).
In Fort Davis Texas you might check out the observatory? Great place to camp; darkest location (meaning least man-made light pollution) in the lower 48 at night if you want to ponder the bazillion stars overhead.

I'll save this information Mr. Geek, and thank you. I have been wanting to explore old Mobile for some time. I had a trip planned for there years ago but Katrina intervened and I ended up in Mississippi slinging pills.

We like the Atchafalaya Basin crossing area on I-10 and the Vicksburg Civil War Park and Museum.

Fat Tuesday is the end of Mardi Gras (not that the partying ever stops).

oops

I haven't been there since before Kartina (for Mardigras).. couldn't remember if it was the week of or the week before. Maybe that's why originally I typed it was a "10 day party" but then thought "9 days would be two weekends and the week between"

Drive fast!

We're in Oklahoma tonight and pushing for Memphis and points south tomorrow. Weather is great with green grass and Daffodils coming up.

I'm heading to the Tampa on Thursday. If you forgot anything critical and it fits in a carry-on, give me a shout Mr. Bob and I'll pick it up for you.

Bring a few mountains. It's too flat around here.
Wish I could remember the name of the great Greek restaurant in Safety Harbor.
